Fuel Type

I was looking at a 1999 TL and was wondering what kind of fuel it took.

I tried searching the forum for "gas" and "fuel type" and nothing came up.

Thanks in advance.

Well, the owner's manual says to stick with a minimum 91 octane. Whether or not you can run regular gas has been discussed ad nauseam. I've run regular octane a few times and I wouldn't recommend it. If you want to run regular and still have 200+ hp V6, then maybe a 7th gen Accord would be a good idea.

91 octane or above

Avoid ethanol added fuels when possible

Use fuel system cleaner like Seafoam or Redline in the gas tank to scrub dirt from injectors- it really does work- especially at 1 can to 1/4 tank of gas

Check the seal on your gas cap and replace if needed

Always tighten gas cap 3 clicks after tight- MINIMUM 3 clicks- 5 or more is fine too
otherwise no seal, and check engine light comes on to freak you out

Always use a quality brand, try to stick to the same station as well. The car calls for premium so stick with it. 91 if it's all that you can get. Luckily here in NY we get 93. Personally I use Amoco/BP.

Once I was very tired and picked up the wrong handle and filled up a nearly empty tank with regular 87. I drove the car like a baby until it got to empty again, then filled up with 93 and a fuel system cleaner.

During the time the car had 87 there were no problems at all. Then again I drove it VERY easy. It took forever to burn the damn gas off since I was driving so nice. lol

lousy excuse. i ABSOLUTELY hate it when people fuss about the difference in price between regular and premium. they make it sound like the difference is hundreds of dollars at one fill up, when in reality the average price difference is about 2 dollars.

if you cant afford 2 dollars 4 times a week. then maybe you shouldn't be driving a car at all?

^^^ true, if you cant afford about $40-45 ( Premium ), then at least do have tank with premium, which roughly gets you by the middle line or a lil above. Last you a week..

Also when you do buy the car ( if haven't already so ), then run fuel cleaning system whenever you do a first fill up and Premium, because you don't know what kind of fuel the car been through. I use the fuel cleaning system, once a month..

^^ I wouldnt do that, just run 91, but if you cant afford it, then do half tank for $20 buxs.. Dont accelerate much, dont shift before redline, and just drive normally, and the gas should last you like a week.

** Im not accusing you of doing anything, but just looking out for you..

I just filled up yesterday at Shell and the difference between regular and premium was only $2.50. Why anyone would risk harming their engine to save $2.50 is beyond me.

If you have to ask about the octane and fuel economy, perhaps you should look at a smaller, less powerful Honda while you are in school

If your TL needs something- like a transmission out of warranty-.........$4000
and the 105k mile service is $600-800 at a shop.
Tires can be $80-190 each!

Just things to add up and look at insurance rates

Insurance for me is killer and that is even with me listed as driving the 99 Camry and my mom on the TL.

And if you are really worried about saving $2-2.50 every fill up, I suggest you get a Prius or Scooter or something.
