Fuel cutoff
Fuel cutoff
Could someone try this:
Start the engine, put it in neutral or park and rev the engine...does it go to redline and then cut out or does it cut out at 5500 rpm?
Is it a limiter, so you wouldn't ruin the transmission if you dropped in gear?

Revving won't hurt an engine, but there's something about revving it in park or neutral. I do know that it is normal for the TL.
But the transmission will protect itself even if you do rev in neutral and pull it into drive. I know this because I had put the car in neutral one time and forgot, and when I went to accelerate it revved and I pulled it into drive too quick
. The car's revs dropped before it engaged.

um yes, it is not good to rev the engine while it does not have a load on it. why, b/c it is designed to be turning a force, we all do it, so its not like i am saying i have never done it. thats why alot of motorcycle guys foul out plugs, b/c they just sit and rev and rev to show off. my sources have been ROUSH racing and kawasaki and a few articles here at there.

You call BS if you want to... Ken can back me up on this. He had an 03 TL-P that consistently got into the 30s on the highway.
Plus if you're not familiar with the EPA ratings and how they do them, the 19/29 figure for the 2002 TL (and other years) is 10% and 22% less than the EPA observed numbers respectively.
If the EPA didn't reduce their numbers by those percentages, they would be overwhelmed by complaints from drivers who can't get anywhere close (because MPG will vary). This was the whole basis for reducing them to begin with.
Therefore, the expected MPG is 19/29 but the TL is capable of
10% of 19 + 19 = 20.9 or 21
22% of 29 + 29 = 35.38 or 35.
21/35.
My gas light for this tank is about to come on in the next few miles, current miles to this tank = 362. 362/14.5 (when my light comes on) 25mpg 60/40 city/highway. Not bad at all for a 3.2L V6.
