Front Engine Mount

Just got a call saying I failed inspection due to front engine mount. They want:

106.48 for the part
74 for the labor

I don't have a manual for my TL, but is this something that I could do myself? Or should I just pay for it?

I just paid $200 to have the Acura dealer do it while they were replacing my tranny, so I guess 180 isn't bad...

Ok, I can get the part online for $81.37 w/ shipping. I called the shop up to ask them to price match the part, and they said that is the price they would get it for. You would think the next logical thing would be "sure, we'll price match you, we're making money from the labor anyways, so why bother you with getting the part". But no, they actually said they want me to bring the part in, so I actually have to order the part and wait a few days, come back to them, and have them install it. I think they were calling me bluff, or thinking I would not go through the hassle to save 30$, but what they don't realize is now I'm going to shop around for another local mechanic to do the install as well, and then come back there for the free retest. So now, they are not going to make any money of the labour either, and probably not have me return as a customer (unless it's to get gas, since it's part of a gas station).

I hate to say this, but it's damn cold outside! Plus, I get a little edgy raising the motor, even if by a few inches. I'm happy to say I had replaced my HID Ballast (w/ your advice if I remember correctly) by myself, but I think this install is out of my comfort zone...

you really dont need to lift the engine much more than a inch. you wont hurt any thing and most of the use of the jack is just to hold the engine from saging so that you can easily get teh new mount in. Other than that its just a few bolts and a vacum line. very easy. If you can replace a hid you cna replace the mount

You sound like the type that would bring their own meat into McDonalds and ask how much the quarter pounder is if you supply the meat. It doesn't sound like they will lose that much money by alienating you...

You've got to understand that there is overhead in everything they do - even ordering parts. They have to pay for the time and benefits of the person ordering the part, the phone bill, the rent, the inevitible warranty return processing when parts are defective or the wrong one was sent, etc. They CAN NOT do things for cost. To do so is to lose money and is not good business. It's perfectly fine, however, if you want to bring a part in. There's no overhead that they could apply to that (and when the wrong part shows up, it's you who will have to deal with the vendor on it).

Let them earn a reasonable fee for their efforts. It may not cost you anything to order it, but it does cost them. BTW - That $30 is less than a half hour of labor at any shop around.

It reminds me of an operations manager at a manufacturing firm I used to work at who jokingly said one day, "The bad news is that we're losing $50 per part. The good news is that sales are through the roof!"

Good point, I did not think of the overhead cost. It's just that my local Acura dealer usually price matches the parts, but I guess they get them even cheaper, else Acuraoemparts.com would not be selling them at that price. Anyways, point taken.

That's it, screw this, I want to do it myself. Can't live with myself now that I bought the part. Did a search and came up with below, is there a better write-up anyone can suggest?

Here is a step by step SUGGESTION of how to replace the front mount.....

Jack the front of the car up and place it on jack stands.
Pull all the little clips out of the plastic guard under the motor.
Undo the bolts for the bracket connected to the motor, (2 underneith, 1 up top.)
Loosen the four bolts connecting the mount to the sub-frame. (they all need long extensions.)
Undo the bolt on top of the mount.
Take the four bolts out.
Twist the mount inplace and lay it on its side.
Pull it out from the drivers side by holding the upper radiator hose to the left.
It will barely squeeze out!
Voila!!
Repeat the steps to replace with new mount. I suggest to attach the mounting bracket to the engine loosly to be able to slide the top of the mount through the hole. That is a bitch, but VERY doable!

make sure to support the engine with the jack. It will also come out easier if you remove the 3 bolts on the top mount so that the thing doesnt have to be twisted out.

did mine at the same time also... the engine just should jump out of the hood the way it tried to. I didn't even think of doing that work myself at the time.

my motor mounts are terrible. everytime i rev the car hard the engine jerks around and the muffler pipes below the car end up hitting stuff so i get terrible scraping sounds at certain RPMs

i was under the impression this was an expensive fix...im happy to see 200$ quotes
