freakin car overheated today~need help

i went to my friends, and when i got there and turned off my engine. the fan was still running (thought that was weird) then i started it back up and let the car run for like 5-10 mins because i was doing something. then when i came back next thing you know my car is smoking and i looked at my temp gauge and it was above H :wow: above H like when you have a full tank of gas above F.
i was like shlttt...so i turned off my car and popped the hood and the reservoir tank was boiling and spilling out coolant so then the car's fan cooled it down. then i drove it home. well i read here somewhere that when the engine get that hot you should change the tranny oil(which i just got a new tranny last week) because it changes the oil someway when it reaches that kind of temp...is this true? maybe it burns the oil

well im taking my car to the dealer tomorrow. wish me luck. thanks

The worst thing that could possibly happen from your overheating would be warping your cylinder head and blowing out the head gasket. Pull your engine oil dipstick and pray that you don't see "milky-colored" oil which is a sign of water in the oil. Beside this, if your engine is running rough or white smoke coming out of the tailpipe you should be ok. Good luck.

I was told that you should never drive your car anywhere once it overheats. Get it towed asap cause even if it is cooled down, you can still do some damage.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

I have a similar problem I think

this happened to me a while ago I was in a mcdonalds drive thru and the air conditioner started throwing out hot air I was like what the fvck I just turned off the A/C when I was pulling out I noticed that the thermostat was 3 notches below the "H" I freaked and pulled into a parking lot called my brother and he brought a gallon of water and I let him look at it he said everything looked normal and whatever I turned the car back on and it was normal....that was like 5 months ago.

it never happened until like 3 weeks ago but it is not the same thing what happened was....it only happens when I sit in without moving the car.....it doesnt matter whether I am in D4 in traffic or in park in a parking spot....whenever it sits for more like 20 minutes it will over heat then if I tap the gas it will drop to normal then like 3-5 minutes later it will go rite back up.

I am cunfused I think it is just a malfunction ........I will show you guys what I am talking about at the South Florida meet

I know excatly what you are talking about. Thus I couldn't figure out, it was happening to me the last couple of days.

After I flush and replaced the honda 50/50 formula with water/redlinewaterwetter/15%antifrezee. After the car was warm-up, when I came to a stop light the neddle would go up to the H after it driving again, it would then go down to the middle. I could also turn the heater on to make it go down.

I thought either my mixed or the flush was not good. So decided to do it again, this time with just water/redlinewaterwetter. I made sure that this time I flushed the engine too throught the bleeder and not just the radiator. Did this 3 days ago and it is working better than ever. Never really found out excatly what caused the neddle to go up. BTW my fan was also coming on after I turn off the car. I also replaced the radiator relay, but it didn't make a difference.

My first inclination was an air pocket still in the system. Maybe the first time you still had an air pocket left .

would it be that one of the fans are busted? do both fans come on when its idle and you have the AC on?

I used to have this problem on my old pontiac. get on the go, and it cools down. stand still and it heats up. of course I never realized this cuz the hot temp gauge never came on. I just knew from the ac warming up or not :P (how useless of the guage) Turns out it was a busted fan after all. Sadly, I didn't get the fan replaced in time and I blew out the entire AC system from overheating. mind u .. the temp light NEVER came on.

happens to me every time i am in traffic and it is hot outside. roll down the windows and crank up the heat to full blast with the ac off. the needle will shoot down.

Whenever you flush out the raidator system, you need to bleed the system out. This is very easy to do. First, Fill up your radiator with the proper mix of coolant and water, do not put the cap back on, and start the car.

Put the heat on full blast and wait for the car to get warm enough for the heat to work. Once the car has warmed up and is blowing heat (meaning the heating coil is filled with hot coolant), you will notice that the level of water/coolant has gone done quite a bit.

Continue to add coolant/water mix to the radiator until full again. You will notice that the coolant mixute will soon start to bubble. Don't panic, this is just the air escaping the system. Also, if some coolant/water mix spills out, don't worry either.

After the coolant mixture stops going down and all the bubbles disappear, put the cap back on tight and shut off the car. Let the engine cool off, then fill the coolant reservoir to the appropriate level.

You're done

How do you guys overheat in first place? Damn, during summer time I sometimes leave car running for extended periods of time with AC set at coldest setting and nothing overheats.

Geographic location might play a factor here...

well took the car to the dealer then when i got there i let it sit for like 5 mins at idill then i noticed the fan didnt turn on and the temp starting going up. i was like "crap" so i took it to service and showed the guy. by the time i showed him the temp gauge was at 1/4 from being HOT. so then he turned off the car...and as soon as the car turn off the fan started turning. he was like thats weird. so i left it. well guys it turns out that when they replaced my tranny they forgot to plug in one of the plugs(like a harness) so no major problems.

hey slammed99TL check if you fans works. like when you come home after a long drive...let it sit and see if the fan starts. mine didnt and the temp started goin up. lucky mine was just a plug but yours can be a sensor sensor...or the fan (if it doesnt even turn on). because when you drive the air outside cools it down, when your stoped and the engine gets too hot the fan cools it down.

thanks for all your help guys~
hopefully it will never happen again~

sounds like you guys who are suffering from overheating have problems with either your fan or thermostat. when the engine hits a certain temp, the fan should turn on - usually when you are just idling/sitting in traffic. when you're driving, there's usually enough 'cool' air passing thru the engine compartment to cool the engine. i do not think geographic location has a tremendous amount to do with the problem - a difference of 10-20 degrees in ambient temperature will not prevent an engine with a faulty fan to not overheat - an old civic i used to drive has overheated in 30-40 degree temperature before.

I have a 03 TL-s and the same thing happened to me. I would just be sitting in the car and its gets to the H on the thermostat. I added some more antifreeze and the problem stopped. Then i took it to the dearler and they said that everything is ok and that they tried all day to get the car to over heat or some chit like that but the car didnt overheat. This problem happened to me like 5 times. All times the care got near the H the car had only been driven for about 3-5 minutes. Funny how i added more antifreeze/coolant the problem stopped.

Do not add "more" antifreeze as the solution....adding too much antifreeze (above 50% mixture) will decrease cooling capacity. If you're over heating, check the fans, replace the thermostat, flush your cooling system..

make sure to keep an eye on the temp gauge from now on. There's a pretty good chance of warping the head/blowing the head gasket. It sounds like it was a dealer screw up. I'd have them do a compression test to make sure there was no damage to the engine. It does not take much overheating to warp something on an all aluminum engine.

It is completely normal for the fan to come on after the car is shut off, if the coolant is too hot.

i dont think it is a location thing either! in the middle of summer 90 to 100 deg out side my car usualy is running 7 to 8 hours straight and most of it is slow driving or siting still! the needle has never moved once, i would bring the car in to have it checked out regardless of where you ive it should never get that hot let alone move (the needle) in my past experiencs with hondas they never move once the engine gets to normal operating temp
