Found some sweeeeet tires...need help

Wassup guyz,

I found a guy on this forum selling Toyo T1S tires for 540 with shipping (USD). That is still a great deal IMO. Anyhow, I looked on toyo's site, and it states that in order to mount a 235/45R17 tire on a rim, you require a 7.5-9 inch rim. Now the TL rim is 6.5-7 which would mean the tire is too wide. However I know a lot of guys who have done it...now is Toyo wrong, or are some guys taking their chances by mounting a non-fitted tire on to their rim???

here's the link to toyo's spec chart:

http://www.toyocanada.com/products/s...quest=Get+Data

let me know what you guys think. If I purchase the tires, i want to be sure that they will fit on my stock TL-S rim.

thanks guys.

don't forget you'll need to pay customs for those tires, may end up paying more than you save

The buyer agreed to label the package as valued at 100 dollars USD, the tires will be shipped in pairs, and he will state that it is a gift, so that no duty fees will be encountered.

shipping charges? those tires are big...

even if he labels them as gifts, it's a gamble. Imagine a gift of 4 round big "thing" of some weight for gift? it's 50/50 chance. If they open the package to inspect, you'll be paying them either way. When I get my door sills, it was in a little box and very light. It was also declared as gifts, but it was opened for inspection nonetheless. Since there was no invoice, labels, barcodes, price tag, or anything that'd indicate they are new or sold items then they let it go for free.

Chances are you'll either get away completely, or pay them a hefy fee. Like I said, 50/50

What are you gonna do in the winter when it snows?? Those are summer only tires.

Toyo is referring to the 80% rule: The width of the wheel should be at least 80% the width of the tire. Or, conversely, the width of the tire should not exceed 1.25 times the width of the wheel.

So, for the narrow 6.5 inch (165mm) wheel on the TL, the widest tire computes to 206. I think we have 215s? Anything wider is exceeding this rule of thumb.

A 245 tire, for instance, should have a 7.7+ (8 inch) wheel. That 235 tire (never heard of that size before) would need a 7.5 inch wheel.

Followup: There are plenty of guys putting 225s and 245s on the stock TL wheel, but they do this at the expense of potentially negative stability during hard cornering. That wide tire has to be laying down with an undersized wheel supporting it.

P.S. What's with the 6 minute limit on doing edits? That seems silly.

Kennelm is partially correct.

I had 245/45/17 Firehawk SZ50 on my TLS wheels.

What happens is that the sidewall ends up bending near the shoulder as opposed to in the middle. But as long as it's a well constructed tmire that can dissipate heat (like any Z rated tire can do) it will be fine.

And yes, you get better handling on medium cornering but under hard cornering the sidewall actually flexes more than a narrower tire would because of the suboptimal flex point.

But if i had 245/45/17 i doubt 235/45/17 would be a problem

Hemants, I'm curious. What part of my comment do you perceive to be "incorrect"?

Nothing really, I should have just said I would elaborate on/clarify what you were saying.

It's not so much that the tire is laying down as much as the fact that a uniform sidewall curve is generally more ridgid than a skewed one where the flex point is more pronounced near the shoulder as opposed to in the middle.

And this is probably why you wouldn't want to do 245/45/17 with a winter tire because the sidewall is already soft to begin with but like I said, with a stiff Z-rated tire that can dissipate heat, it shouldn't be a problem.
