Post FouL smell coming out of A/C

I thought that the micron airfilter thing thats in our cars should prevent the A/C from smelling. Anybody got it? How do you get rid of it?

When I drive to Sacto, I have this problem of bad smell when I pass a manuer plant off the 5. When I have my AC on, I usually have it set to Fresh, but when there is a bad smell, I turn it to Recirculate and the smell is not there anymore from outside.

But, I think you might be talking about when you have your AC on for a while and then turn just the AC off and there is this musty sweet chemical somtimes as well. I only get those when the AC has been running for a long time or if it is a really hot day.

Another possibility is that mold/mildew can form on your a/c evaporator and give off a funny scent. This can be cleaned by a mechanic for a little over $100.

I'm not that impressed with the filtering abilities of our micron air filter either. If we had a HEPA grade filter, that'll remove the foul odors much better.

i found the best way to get rid of the smell is to turn off the AC setting but leave the fan blowing before turning your car off. this way, it blows out all the r134a freon-enriched air out of the vent. that way, the mildew wont result in the air vents. youll know when to turn off the fan afterwards cause the air will become slightly warmer. you only need to have the fan blowing for 10 seconds or so.

I agree with Bebee, sounds liek mold/mildew which forms on the evaporator and in teh ducts. The problem is worse when you trun off the Ac and just have fresh air flowing through the vents.

A quick fix is to spray Lysol into your air inlet which is just below the windshield while you have your fans set to high. This will temporarily kill the mold/mildew and smell, although it will smell like Lysol for a little while.

yeah..i was talking about the mildew/mold smell the comes out when you just turn on the A/C. It goes away after awhile, but still, that shit smells like nasty feet. My TL dont smell but I think its starting too, my integra used to smell. So how do you prevent this smell before it starts?

It's a good recommendation that whenever you use your A/C, you should turn it off about 1 minute before you reach your destination but leave the fan blowing. This way, the evaporator has a chance to reach more ambient temperatures. Mold forms on the evaporator because this is the part of the a/c system that cools the air that blows through it. When the evaporator is left cold, condensation forms if it is below the dew point (kinda like how condensation forms on the outside of a cold soda can). Naturally, this means that mold has the potential to form whenever the A/C is in use, but the blowing of the fan helps minimize the growth. R134a refrigerant is sealed and recirculated within the a/c and should never enter the passenger compartment vents; it is not consumed in the cooling process and only needs to be periodically recharged because it gradually leaks out of the system due to its high pressure.
