Hey guys, need an opinion. I saw this mod at HIN last weekend and thought it was pretty nice. Wanted to get your thoughts on it.



I found a DIY on a cheaper way to do it which seems like it could work, but the hinges they use are pretty crappy:

If I were to use some decent hinges, u think it would be worth it? I don't have a system or anything worth looking at in the trunk, but just wanted to try it out. Worst case scenario I can put it back how it was.

yea...3yrs...but for ur info...if u mod ur trunk like that...ur have less clearance when putting shit in...kuz the bottom ledge is down like that...great way do put scratches on there...

I don't understand. What's rice about that? It's just a different way of opening the trunk.. and honestly I think it looks good and it would for sure keep people hands off my trunk lid if my trunk was this way... Cuz the TL (modified) is not common at all around here so they all wanna know what kinda car it is so when they get to the back (and the trunk is popped) they try to look at the badges but they dont see shit so they grab the trunk lid to check it better.... at least that way the (debadged) emblems would be clearly (in)visible.

IMO the word rice is overrated these days. People say "rice" instead of "different".

you have to open the trunk the normal way then remove the pins for it to "flop" like that. pretty retarded. get some linear actuators so the trunk open and closes by itself... that would be hot.

i think its rice because its something that all the ricers used to do to their trunk lids. i just think certain things dont look right on a tl. the flip trunk mod is pretty much the same as lambo/suicide doors

 

they actuaully have it to were you can open it regularly and flip flop whichever you want but i agree with the actuater idea were it opens and closes on it's own. ohhhh maybe old actuaters from a honda oddysey??? those things are built to last and you wont run into problems with a spoiler weight??????.

 

I'll look up some actuator possibilities.....I'm sti'll undecided on this one. I still think it looks pretty cool but you guys do prove a good point that it might sway a lot. And you CAN open it and have it sway, you don't have to open it normal and then take the pins out. Rice 3 years ago or not, it's something different that I havn't seen on a TL. Watch I won't do it and then next week there will be 10 posts in the photo section of *Flip Flop Trunk Mod*. haha.

 

i too would get a actuator and have it open and close with a press of a button

Looks interesting - for a show car

 

I just checked the website for more info on this mod.... The hinges that come from autoloc, are:

- universal, for use on any car...bonus

- comes with pins that allow you to change the trunk back to stock form in a matter of seconds..... very cool..... Didn't know this when I read the post origionally, I guess I thought the trunk would ONLY open up "level" once the new hinges were installed.

- costs only 99 bucks!!! very very cool!


I'm now seriously considering getting this in the next three or four months.. it's cheap and it's reversable, what else could you ask for.

 

The pins are left out if you want the trunk to flop.... you open the trunk and install the pins to make the trunk open and close normally.

You're not supposed to open the trunk and remove the pins everytime you want the trunk to flop.. That would be stupid..

Having the mod reversable instantly by installing pins is brilliant. It might not be your style but it is a great design

it would look nice along with the huge muffler that i can stick my fist in (all sound and no go), the black spray painted civic oem rims, and blue lights on your windshield sprayers.

i think we are overusing the word "rice"... simply because one does not feel that it's a mod he/she would do doesn't really make it "rice." it's hard to define exactly what this term is becuase its slang plus everyone has their own verison/interpetation of it. plus, if you are going to put a mod/idea down, at least back it up with some sort of reason. its not like hangman where its yay or nay only.

i think it's alright. dont think its something i would do to my car, but if you were to pull it off that would be pretty tight!

 

a ricer is a person who puts retarded parts on the wrong car. thats my definition. the flip trunk mod works on certain cars but not the tl. then again, as time goes on our cars are gonna start moving away from that classy grain and become everyday beaters. so to each his own.


btw, a 100 bucks is way to much for this mod. its really simple. they sell the same stuff at home depot for 20 bucks

 

o yea...just another reminder...even if u do install it rite...the weight might cause the bak of the trunk to pop up when closed...like not closed all the way...its really annoying to look at...my friend did this to his si...n man...even he said the trunk was getting annoying...

 

You know what, I never thought of that. I guess that would be annoying......scratch this mod.

 

my defintion of ricer: 2 foot tall spoiler, blue died halogen bulbs, NOS decals, exhaust so big that I can fist it, sounds like my lawn mower, ... basically a car that tries to look high end but made of cheap after market parts. also tries to sound fast but just all noise.

I think the trunk mod would look pretty awsome if you got a system set up in your trunk.

 

It's a lot cheaper than $99 bucks.
