Question Flat tire question

Once the stock Michelin tire we all have are flat (due to a puncture), how far can we travel (since they are run flat) before they begin to get damaged and become unfixable?

Flat tire tonight!

Well, just felt like sharing with all you guys that tonight I got the first flat tire on my 2003 TL-S after 1 year of purchase. I was driving on the freeway for maybe about 25 miles and felt that the car was a little weird, but little did I suspect that my rear driver's side tire was flat! It was not until I was parking my car on the street that a lady came up to my car and told me it was flat! I was totally shocked... since I did not know for how long I had been driving with the flat tire, possibly damaging the tire or even the rim! So I called Acura Road Assistance and they came to change the tire after 30 minutes, yeah I know, I could have done it myself but I felt pretty lazy :p . Turns out there is this metallic thing on the damn tire. I was so disappointed at the spare tire we have for our almost $35K car, a pretty pathetic donut... oh well.

Yea I remember back in the day, my dad's first mod to a car would include taking out the spare in the back and putting in a full sized one on there. I guess auto manufacturers are now worried about gas mileage and it really does make sense to make a spare smaller and lighter, since it will be carried at all times. I see plenty of people driving 70mph+ in spares and that's not good for the car at all.

Weird... I thought the tire was run flat because I drove on the flat tire for some distance before I even knew it was flat and the tire seems fine.

They are not run flats. And do not use fix a flat. They leave this sticky gooey mess inside the tire. That's why tire places curse.

Well I went to try to fix my tire today and it turns out that its too messed up because I drove for too long while it was flat... so I had to get a new tire. Got the new Michelin at the Dealer for $191 (not including tax), ok deal? Wanted the tire to be the stock tire...

Has anyone here put a full-size spare in their car? If so, did you have to modify the trunk?

Question Running the tire flat, bad?

As you all know I had a flat tire last night and drove for a relatively far distance before I noticed (maybe 15-20 miles, although not really sure when the tire was flat). My question is... if I did indeed drive for that far with the flat tire, did it damaged my rim? I went to the dealership today to get a new tire because the punctured tire (by a nail) could not be fixed because it had bumbs on the inner side of the tire, and they did not say anything about my rim being damaged... is my rim safe?

Well usually if your rim is bent, you will feel it in the driving. Your steering wheel will shake at either highway speeds or normal speeds. If you dont experience any of this, then I wouldnt worry. Also another sign to pay attention to is air pressure. Keep track on how much air you put in the tire, and see if air leaks out excessively in that tire over a couple of days. If it does, than it could be a sign that you have a small bend.

Either way if you dont feel it in your steering or when ur driving.. then I wouldn't really worry about it. I went to Mavis Tire today, and they told me that 3 of my 4 rims were slightly bent. But the bend was so small, they could take care of it with extra and cautious balancing, so no need to get the rims fixed for me. Besides I live in Pothole City.. i mean New York City.

And if you find your rim being bent, dont worry, u can get it fixed for about 100 bux. Hope this helps.

Note: thsiao, I merged all of your 'flat tire' threads into this one. No need to create three threads in one forum about the same problem.

it's also supposedly really flamable stuff...not good to have a fire when you have hundreds of tires in a shop

Did you buy the tire yet? If not, if your have a Costco by you, I'd check them out... I got 4 tires for 160 each w/ mounting & balancing.
