First Oil Change... Mobil 1

My TLS has about 5K miles on it and, on the advice of one of the service techs at my local dealership, has not had its first oil change. I'm an old dog and the old rule of thumb was to dump the original oil and filter after about a 1,000 miles and add what you intend to use for the life of your car. Apparently that's the old school of thought.

The tech strongly suggested that I leave the original oil in for 7500 miles, change it with dino oil, and add the syn stuff sometime around 10 to 12k miles.

Be interested in hearing from of my fellow TLSers on this issue, especially any of you fine folks who happen to work on these fine little cars. One of the arguments used to be that adding syn oil too soon, before everything was nice and seated and scuffed up in your motor, could lead to excessive oil usage down the line. Since a lot of fine cars... Porsches and Vetts for example, role off of the assembly line with syn oil I wonder if that logic is correct.

So, with all of that said... if you guys use syn over dino when did you make the switch...

Good forum, good people and the TLS is truly a fine car... dumped an A4 to get mine and, as much as I like the Audi, the TLS beats it hands down for long interstate hauls at speeds that make the local constables get high blood pressure...

Wow.. that's surprising. My dealer sent me a letter at 3750 advising me to come in for an oil change and fluid inspection. Of course I did not do that, I changed my own oil around 4200 miles.

At that time I changed to Mobil1 5w-30 synthetic with Purolater PureOne filters. Once Mobil1 changed their formula to the Tri-Syn, I switched to Redline 5w20 with a Mobil1 filter. Have been using that since.

I don't think that going 7500 miles on the break-in oil is really a good idea. I'd change that out ASAP. I mean, clean oil won't harm your car.. but dirty oil could.. and with 5k... your car is past the break-in stage.....

Get oil change @ 3750 (use dino). Get another oil change at 7500 (use syn). Change every 7500 using syn for the rest of the car's life (my plan).

As I understand it, the factory oil is specially formulated for the break-in period. I was told by the Acura Service department to leave it in for the full 5000 miles.

Do a search on this board to see if others agree.

Update: here is a good thread:

It would appear this is alot more controversial than I first thought...

I changed mine to Mobile 1 at 5k and will continue to do so every 5k, I used a Purolater PureOne because I could not find a Mobile 1 filter.

I changed my oil the first time at 4100 miles. I went with Mobil 1 5W-30. Changed it again at 9300, and again at 14100. This was about six months between oil changes (and virtually all city driving in hot weather).

I had the 14100 drain analyzed by Blackstone Labs (including TBN). It came back with normal to below-normal wear figures, so I'm confident that what I did was fine. I'm also increasing my drain to 7000 miles or 9 months, whichever comes first. We'll see.

I brochure with savings to change my oil at 7000 miles at the dealer, but I only had about 3500, I guess they think I drive around a little more than I do. Anyway, I'm thinking of changing the oil now that I'm nearing 5000 miles.

The dealer gave me a free oil change coupon for 3,750 miles so don't think you need to wait longer than that.
