Post First Experiences with TL-S

Was chillin at the dealer gettin some service done, obviously bored out of my mind, then decided to test drive the MDX and TL-S...

MDX first: acceleration totally sucks, at all speeds, handling seemed well for a suv.. not nearly as good as X5.. but you're paying for that. Fit finish seemed nice, stlye was very nice.

TL-S:

Had navi. This was one bad boy, when we were leaving the lot for the spin, the salesman said, this is how you drive it, and floored it out... i was like hell yeah... he gave it to me, and egged me on.. first time in my life a salesperson has egged me on to go faster. Needless to say i hit 120 within 2 minutes of driving.

This is one fast car, and it handles a LOT better than mine. I"d definitely say the speed is less of a difference than the handling. The only thing that REALLY pissed me off is that 1st and second gear shift for you in sport stick mode. I was surprised about this considering mine doesnt, i can rev past red, it seemed as if the type -s shifted before it even hit red. Other than that it was a thrill.

The navi makes me think I should have gotten it.. its so sweet, and the A/C controls aren't the same as an Accords like mine is!!

I wouldn't want to be the person that buys that TL-S off the lot. Not even broken in and it's been pushed to 120Mph; fun test drive but hope no damage was done. Wonder what other abuse it's received.

120 MPH in 2 minutes? That's kinda slow......don't you think?
Mine can do that in less than 20 seconds.

The one I test drove had about 1800 on it. There are two views I've heard of when breaking in a car.
One being you break it in like a P*ssy, it will drive like a P*ssy.
Two being you break it in like a bat out of hell. It will drive like a bat out of hell.

You make the decision.

Only thing I know is that I kept every car I've owned under 60mph for the first 500, and driven every one to well over 150K miles with zero engine and tranny work aside from normal maintenance.

Abuse a car, and it'll give you nothing but trouble. Yes, tolerances and designs are much improved, but that still doesn't mean you should beat on a car and expect it to perform at its potential.

Driving a car at 120mph off the lot does nothing but cause needless wear that you will most definitely pay serious $$$ for at around 40-50K when it starts burning oil and you need to replace seals that didn't get a chance to set right.

Forgot what the dealer tells you - talk to a mechanic if you want real advice, and RTFM!

Flying Pig, it takes your car a lot longer than 20 seconds to get to 120mph from a standstill. I would guess on the north side of 25 seconds.

LOL!

It didn't take me two minutes to hit 120, I meant within 2 minutes of my posession, i was already doing 120, thats how much the salesperson was eggin me on. We had to get on the highway first, I wasn't gonna do 120 on a feeder, thats not very intelligent. Sheesh I don't think even the worst driver would take 2 minutes to hit 120 if they were trying to hit 120.

Ne ways, lovely car, I"m sure you all are happy with it! About any damage to the car... there WAS NO DAMAGE. uhhh.. what would you do if the salesman of all people is telling you to go faster? "Nooo.. man... I buy a TL-S to go slow..." Look, I own a 2nd Gen TL and I wanted to see the difference. Quite frankly if you are buying a Type-S version you BETTER test that puppy out. Its quite evident that the distinction between my TL and the TL-S is a difference between performance enthusiasts.. afterall, the cars are 99% the same in all other respects. I did test the car to its limits, and I'd do it again, Thats what the type-s is about -performance. What benefit would i get for driving the Type-S normally? I already know how a TL that is driven normally feels, i drive one every day. Would you buy a porsche and drive only 60 mph? I hope not otherwise you don't deserve a porsche. And I' know 99% of other people would do the exact same thing in my situation, in Houston for example, Momentum (a BMW-Porsche-Jag) Dealer built a race track recently behind its dealership. Why do you think they did that.. for a soapbox derby?? Nothing pisses me off more than those people that have a bad ass Ferrari or 911 Turbo but don't drive it like it is a ferrari or 911 Turbo. Instead, it sits in their garage and they buff it everyday and show it off to their friends and girlfriends. I didn't go to0 far into redlining the car, I didn't brake overly hard, no, I didn't do anything I wouldn't do to my car. I drove it like it was built to be driven period.

those 'two' views sound like 'one' view to me.

I tested the TL-S only a little hard. When I picked one to buy it was not yet prepped. I did that purposely to ensure I didn't get one that had been abused. I had the service guy promise he wouldn't abuse it when he took it for it's "certification" run. (I have no way of knowing if he complied though).

I think the TL-S engine is pretty bulletproof. Honda has demonstrated considerable skill in this area. I just prefer to be certain.
