Thumbs up Finally got rid of the Megans, got XS Headers

I've had Megan headers for almost 2 years now, and while the gains they've provided have been excellent (esp. for $180), the awful resonance they created were pretty intolerable. For those who aren't familiar with it, it sounds like a weedwhacker hitting a chain link fence and was present at anything above 2k rpms. I've been on a looong path to getting rid of this noise:

1) Got a new downpipe for free from Megan, the old one was touching the oilpan. The resonance was not solved. Spent $60 for install.

2) Bought a set of used AWs on . Got scammed, was sent a set of cracked headers with no nameplate on them, out $300 and $50 for an aborted install.

3) Bought a set of new AWs from Excelerate for $400sthg? They were warped terribly, spent $200 on an aborted install. Went thru hell and back shipping the headers here and there, trying to get that nitwit Carlos to honor warranty work. Finally had my CC company step in and refund me the $ for the headers. Lost probably $40 in shipping fees and hours of my time.

4) Bought XS-Power headers on ebay... yes, those crappy no name ones, $150 SHIPPED to my house in like 3 days. Got them installed by a board member for cheap. They sound GREAT. 95% resonance free! There's a slight bit of resonance at certain RPMs if I'm on the gas when I'm making a 90 degree turn, but nothing major.

So, long story short, buy the XS-Power headers from SSAutochrome on ebay. They fit fine and sound great. No problems at all. Price is right too!
Just a word of caution, be PATIENT. Do NOT go outbidding each other on ebay, or else the seller will certainly raise the price. I was outbid a few times on these headers once (i'm sure it was someone on Acurazine), but I simply waited for the next auction which ended like 2 days later. Patience!!!

Glad to see another member with the XS Power headers on, I bought mine a month ago, I can't put it on myself because the bolts are so rusted to the point where using both an impact wrench and blow torch don't work at all

Someone dyno up to see if we get some nice numbers. I dont see myself spending all that money on comptech headers when I can get these for 150.

I installed these about a month ago. I'm very happy with them. I may have been the first on the TL board to do so. I've been following the posts from the guys on the CL forum. A few of them had them dynoed and the gains are almost identical to Comptech. Here is a link to one of the dyno threads...

They should be since most of the cheap headers simply copied the CompTechs.

The butt-dyno reads the same as when I had the Megans in... I can take a pic of the headers installed, but i don't think you'll be able to see too much from them?

here are some pics
had two friends of mine look at them, one builds his own headers/turbo manifolds etc and he saw these and couldn't get over that they where actually good quality especially with the 3/8 flanges and the grinding out of the welds inside the pipes also.

the othere is a diesel mechanic and also agreed that they look like good quality and its not cheap stainless either

No fitment issues at all, even more so, the hanger that is welded to the downpipe is even a better assesment than stock. You get more clearance surprisingly I was surprised when me and mark installed it into his car.

Nope. There were never fittment issues with the Megans anyway, aside from the early problem of the downpipe touching the oilpan, but that wasn't a big deal.

for an 02 type-s don't know if they are different for other years, but they shouldn't be..

the 2 header gaskets for the engine are part number 18115-P8E-A01
the 2 o ring gaskets for the headers into the downpipe are 18212-SA7-003
and the other o ring gasket for the downpipe to the cat is 18393-SS0-J30

i'll be ordering these up this week also.. Also the bolts that come with the headers aren't that great, i'm going with all stainless steel bolts/nuts with a higher grade than comes with the headers

Got mine installed today......so far so good, could not not tell a difference in power since I am switching out megans. No resonance which for me is the most important part!!..Took the car out for a spirited drive could not produce any resonace........Very happy and for 160$ if I have any problems down the road I can just buy another set.
To hell with comptech,XS is great!

good question..........I bought OEM gaskets, which you do need to get at a dealership only........dont get the O ring gaskets though, only the engine to header gasket.I bought all the O ring gaskets listed above and they did not fit.Ended up using the SSautochrome ones.
The bolts are pretty weak (4.8)and worst of all thin, makes it alot harder to align when installing..Go to a local hardware store or even a home depot and get the stronger (8.8) brass looking bolts.....For bolts I just used my old megan bolts they were actually not bad and I didn't strip them on removal.Good Luck

Call me a nub, but what are the O ring gaskets for? (Never installed headers before) And where do they actually go?

(They are the little metal O's I assume)

the O ring gaskets keep a better seal............my old megans just used a regular gasket. They go in that indentation when connecting the down pipe to the flanges(I believe this is what they are called) And the bigger O ring connects the down pipe to the Cat.

Just so you know... to fix the resonance from the Megans, simply get a shop to cut out the small flex pipe in the front and weld on a straight piece of pipe. The air rushing through the flex pipe causes the leaking resonance sound.. All the other brands of headers have the econd flex pipe however the megans are the only ones that have one up front and one in the back.

That adjustment to the headers shouldn't cost over a hundread bucks..

^^ I did this already................must have got the minimum wage welder though,str8 pipe developed small crack and of course leak.Pissed off enough with megan, just went with these XS power headers..Even though the fix would have been easy,I've gotten to the point where I am almost embarrashed to say I owned Megan headers..........(although SSautochrome isn't exactly thought of well either)

Just paid for a set of these headers. For $150, even if they are dead in a year, won't consider any real loss for that cheap! Hoping these will give the TL-S the few extra ponies I feel it needs.

Those of you who have these on, anyone running stock exhaust back from the headers? If so, whats the noise increase, if any, like? I like to keep exhaust noise to a minimum.
