( ffsttyms ) Help cleaning the TB

i looked at this link and still have a few questions, ive never done any engine work before so me and my uncle might tackle this this weekend
http://www.acurainspired.com/forums/...showtopic=4003

1. what exactly do i need? 3 cans of carb cleaner and those pipe cleaners? what size wrench?

2. so basically, you unscrew the black hood that says 3.2 ULEV, and the botton of it is what needs to be cleaned? or is it after you take off the black hood, theres another ten bolts that you need to take off, remove that silver plate and then you can start cleaning?

3. i read all this stuff abuot disconnecting wires, how many wires, how are they disconnected?

4. what are you cleaning with a hose? is that something totally different?

thanks for helping my dumbass out, im getting shitty mpg and my car has high miles so i wanna try this

what year TL?.
the 99's look different.
same process...very easy to do.
take your time.
you dont need to take the throttle body off the manifold.

you remove the plastic covers. Then remove throttle cables and all hoses and wires that go to the Intake Manifold. Then remove the ten bolts on the top of the IM. lift that slowly as to being carefull not to damage teh gasket.

once thats removed look down inside the IM you will see (7 bolts, 2 nuts) remove them. then lift the IM straight up checking that you havent missed any hoses or wires. once removed, clean every thing that you see has buildup on it

Sheesh, it looks like cleaning the IM/TB is the lastest fad in the 2nd gen TL section.

it cleans out carbon deposits due to build up from the egr valve. when completly clogged it may not idle as smooth and will cause a check engine light. it wont add hp if thats what your asking

i cleaned out the EGR port last week, but didn't go all out to hose it down.

i mainly did this to improve gas milage, but i really don't see much of a diff right now. maybe if i had cleaned it out as well as everyone else, I would have seen a bigger difference.

it took me a while to get it off, as I have a stock 02 TL-S

10mm and 12mm are the two sizes that you'll encounter.

well if it really wasnt clogged or throwing a code you probably wouldnt see any differencr since it was operating normally
