Is the filter really that dirty that it needs to be clean right away? The cotton gauze filter on the CAI uses the oil (comes in the kit) to actually trap fine particles. I'm afarid that if you just wash it with soap and water, you'll wash any oil residue away and in the long term lead to clog sensors or injector. Just my thought.......don't go cheap.

I remember writing an email to K&N company asking about how often to clean the filter, they said that every 30,000 miles as long as you dont drive on dusty roads a lot, plus they said that the dirt built up actually helps the filter to filter our more crap out.

I guess all you have to do is reoil once in a while.

But if i'm wrong please correct me.

The cleaning kit is a degreaser and the filter oil to replace the one that you just washed off. Don't use water/soap as it may just clog the cotton and make your filter even worse than before. (might not even filter at all) Other degreasers may work but may shorten the life of the filter. If you don't mind buying another filter down the road, then degrease it (use simple green or greased lightning) then reoil it with some form of tranny/ hydraulic fluid. But consider your filter done after this 'coz it may not last the same as using K&N oil.

yeah, thx...i just thought i'd clean it since it was seriously black (red original), i'd just driven thru a lotta dirt, and had to take the bumper off because i had to finish something i started 2weeks ago. I'll buy the kit right away.

i just put it in warm water (hot) and moved around a bit, i could see some oily stuff over the surface of the water and a lotta dirt, moquitos rocks and i even think i found aliens. i left it to dry overnight and im heading back and buyin that K&N kit.

thanks duds.

its all good, take some paper towel go over that, if you can see that the filter is oily take some off, you dont want that oil going into your engine.

peace

K&N suggest to rewash it if you over oil, but just use paper towel and let it air dry, preferrbly somewhere outside with no dust flying.

Just put the paper towel next to the filter, dont really use hard pressure to soak it...

I did that before, i over oiled my last filter, it was ridiculous, took like 1.5 days to dry, lol.
