erasing swirl marks

I have swirls when I see the sun reflected in the finish. It's either the wax (Nu Finish) or a car duster (http://calcarduster.com/originalDuster.asp). I'm tossing the duster because it's getting old, and I think you probably get what you pay for with wax. Nu Finish claims no rubbing or buffing, but that's BS 'cause I have to work my ass off to remove streaks.

1) What's the best wax in your opinion...what about that new Turtle Wax Ultra Gloss? Should I strip off the current wax before applying another coat of new stuff?

3) What are claybars for, specifically? Would that help?

3) Do you dust your car between washes?

4) Best tire treatment--Armor-all?

Much obliged--thanks!

The claybar won't help swirl marks, it's to get contaminents out of the paint. Definitely the best "wax" you can get right now for a moderate price is Meguiars NXT, which is actually a synthetic polymer. It will provide a really awesome shine but also strong, long lasting protection. It will cover up the swirl marks pretty well, but if you want them eliminated, you will need to use rubbing compound, like ScratchX from Meguiar's or Kit Scratch Out. These products will rub out minor scratches like swirl marks. And always be sure to use at least a 100% cotton towel to dry the car, but microfiber towels are best. It would be a good idea to strip the wax with a dawn soap and water wash before applying the new wax.

Eagle makes a good tire treatment. Haven't tried Armor All Tire Dressing, I wouldn't trust the brand name though.

Best Wax.......Gotta be Zaino  But true....it's a bit pricey and time consuming......so if you dont want to go that way then i hear very good things about S100......but if you go with Zaino.....it has a step thats supposed to get rid of swirls.....it all depends on how much money and time you want to spend on wax

Is Meguiar's NXT like Liquid Glass? I have used LG for years and have noticed it was good on dark colors but when I applied it to my SSM Type-S, the silver seemed "brighter". What are the pros' ideas about using wax/ polish on top of polymer, is it OK?

Here's what I do every year:

1) Wash with Dawn to remove old wax
2) Clay - helps remove all the contaminats from the paint and really makes a huge difference. Just feel the before and after...'nuff said.
3) Compound - This step is optional, depends on how bad ur finish is. I would recommend any 3M products like the Perfect It or Finnesse It line. Meguires DACP is also a good one. The key here is to remove the swirl marks from the finish. I like using products that have no fillers so u know what the finish looks like with no cover ups.
4) Polish - I use Pinnacle Paint Cleaner but Meguires Deep Crystal is a good product as well.
5) Sealant - I use 1 coat of Klasse AIO followed by 3 coats of Klasse SG. I wait 24 hrs between coats of the SG. Some people recomment Zaino here. Never used it but I have seen the results and have been impressed. I prefer Klasse but either one will do.
6) Wax - I like to layer wax on top of the sealant to give the finish a wet look, something the sealants lack.

I use a Porter Cable 7424 machine since doing all this by hand is a killer. Plus the machine speeds things up and gives the finish something u cannot acheive by hand. Now this will take u several days to do but the results if done right are stunning. In between washes I use a good quick detailer and the california duster and I only use microfiber towels so I don't create new swirls in the paint.

As for the wheels, I take them off the car once a year in the spring and completely clean them. I use Meguires gel as a dressing since that seems to last longer than the others but it's all a matter of personal taste on gloss level. I use all Pinnacle products for the inside, leather and dash. Good Luck and happy detailing...

I know by hand it's quite exhausting. That's why I bought the Porter Cable 7424 It speeds things up and does a better job than by hand alone. U can find one at Lowes for like $120 and then just buy the attachments from www.properautocare.com.

be careful using any power drill, grinder, or stud drill for waxing and buffing. If the tool doesn't have a adjustable speed control it'll burn through your paint. For 59 bucks canadian there ws a Simonize (spelt wrong I think) 10 inch orbital buffer. It works great and there also was a battery powered one, but it only came with two batteries I figured it would run out. The buffer will stop spinning and just vibrate if you are pushing too hard into the paint. I used it for my car 5 coats, a buddies Liberty, X5 and a SL500 ($160,000!!!) it works great IMO. just my $0.02
