where is it coming from
the tl has a known issue of 2 things ticking. the fuel pressure regulator, or the purge control solenoid one is under the hood, one is right infront of teh drivers side wheel under the car

If it is a constant ticking sound when the engine is running, it may be a valve clearance problem. The valves may be taping against the cylinder block during the closing cycle. If that happens, each valve will need to have the clearance checked and adjusted if necessary.

Mine ticks all the time. It is a 2002 TLS with 76k miles.

Man, I think all TL's do this. I know the purge solenoid ticks on mine (no biggie -only when warm), and if I turn the car off after driving and then turn it on a few minutes later it ticks quite loudly. This is only cured by keeping it a 2k+ rpms for a few seconds and letting it go back to idle.

I figure it's probably some sort of hydraulic adjuster for the valves that needs to pressurize, but that's just a SWAG. I can only hear it if my windows are down.
