Engine ticking

I just bought a 99 tl with 36,000 on it. The engine has a prety good tick going. It seems to "clear up" after about 20 minutes of driving. Does anyone have this problem or has anyone heard anything about it?? Is there any truth in that engine restore stuff?? Thanks guys

The sound occurs in the morning or after the car has sat for a while? The sound is most likely coming from the valve lifters. It goes away when oil reaches that part of the engine. Change the oil to a lighter weight with a high level of detergents. See if this helps. Run it about a month or so and change again to your normal oil.

Yeah, sounds like a valve tick, but that is low mileage for that to happen, maybe it is from a component of the vacuum system, my first gen. had a problem like that.

I have a clicking noise where the y pipes split off. Anyone have any clues on fixing this?

On the Y pipe...it sounds like there's a hole in the pipe. Does it get more pronounced when the engine is under a load? If it is that could probably just be welded by a muffler shop.

You can also get that sound from the injectors when your car hasn't warmed up yet. You tend to hear it more often during the winter, maybe a little when it gets warmer out.

There is a solenoid under the hood that ticks. I thought it was my valves, until I found the solenoid. It's right up top, a few inches from the firewall, and on the drivers side.

If you grab it while the car is running, you feel it ticking.

I have no idea what would cause a ticking sound from the area of the Y pipe.

LOL!

Thats the intake from the vapro system!!!

My post about the ticking behind the rear driverside wheel, and the one you just stated are related... you will only hear them both at the same time, never one at a time, and its the vapors getting pumped fromt he gas tank in to the intake. the ticking behind the wheel is the pump moving the vapors out, the tick near the firewall is the pump pushing the vapors in the intake

I plaued with this for WEEKS till i figured it out and talked to Acura about it. Damn ULEV system....

I have the ticking noise also. Even when my car has been running for 30 mins and I come to a light it will tick until like 20 mph if I take off slowly. Its kind of annoying. I took it to the dealer about 3 weeks ago to get my tranny replaced and they said that ticking noise could be from the tranny and after they replaced the tranny is still have the noise.

For people who debaded there TL's. Who you be willing to sell me your 3.2TL emblem. I had 2 of them on my car and they got jacked a few weeks ago. Email me or pm..

the dealer told me it was the valve lifters too but i dont know. very odd to me. why is a ****ing acura making these noises? i got a acura for a reason. i know no car company has no problems but for god sakes, its not like i am complaing about just the ticking.... tranny...driver side mirror doesnt move... driver seat rattles (replaced) ... now passenger seat squeaking..... sunroof ****ing rattle. **** me i could of gotten a bmw if i wanted this ****.

Has anyone inquired about getting the vapor pump moved farther away from the firewall to reduce the ticking noise?

I'm due for my 7500 mile checkup this week so I will inquire about getting moved/replaced.

The ticking you hear is most likely the Purge control solonoid. The one by the rear wheel is either the bypass control solonoid or if its a single loud click that would be the Canister vent shut valve. All of these are evaporative emissions control devices. take a good listen to your noise. I have put a few engine blocks in 99 tls due to a noise from number 5 cyl. If your ticking sounds like its coming from the middle of the block somewhere right above the front motor mount and is rpm related, you may have a problem developing.

mine started ticking also...
it only ticks when i lightly step on the accelerator...

so the problem is with the purge control solenoid? what can the dealer do to fix this? will they replace it under warranty?

My Civic had the same tick and so does my moms Accord. I think it's just a Honda thing. Never had any engine problems out of my Hondas except they just weren't fast enough.

Really? Wow, my sister went through 2 Preludes and both of them did the same thing. I take mine in this week for the 30k I'll ask them to check it just for giggles. I'm sure they'll say "can't duplicate the sound" and move on. I'll post what I hear. And in the meantime if anyone gets to the bottom of it I guess I would like to know. Mine ticks but I just thought it was a "Honda"thing.:p

There is another ticking that you may be hearing. I've noticed that mine will tick from the valves if you turn it off for a few minutes after you've been driving. (i.e. going into a store and coming out a few minutes later) The ticking is definitely from the valves, but clears up quickly when you start driving.

I've learned to ignore it.

Try it as a test and let me know if yours does it. After driving for a while, stop the engine for a few minutes and then start it back up. The ticking is even more pronounced if you're parked next to a van or larger SUV where the sound bounces back to you.

Wow! Mine's been ticking continuously and I wrote it off as the belt or something like that. When I'm idle, its a tick at the same pace. When I accelerate, the ticking becomes faster...definitely depending on the rpm.

Guess the next time I bring my car in I will ask them to look into it.

I took my car in for the ticking sound a couple of months ago....Ofcourse i got the ol "Cannot reproduce problem" explaination. But the sound has magically dissappeared in the last month or so....hope it stays that way!

It seemed to happen during the winter, lasted sporadically for a month or so (granted it doesnt really get cold in SFlorida).

In my view, if you get any luxury/near luxury car...all these irritating things should not happen. unacceptable. That was ok with the clunker i had in school not with this.

Yep, definitely the same tick when I turn it off for a few minutes. You are not the only one. I go in tomorrow for my 30k, I'll let you know what they tell me. Some crap I'm sure.

when i made the post a few days ago, it was -10 degrees, plus windchill...
i think the cold weather might have been a factor...

this morning was around -2, and there was no more rpm related ticking, nor any oher ticking noises...

nevertheless, i will still ask the dealer about it next time i bring it in for an oil change (i have free dealer oil change coupons)...
