Engine sweet spot

You know how some cars get better gas milage at 80 as opposed to 70, or something like that?

At what engine speed(or road speed) would you guys say our regular TL, sweet spot is? LIke our most economical point in our RPM band. I just wann figure out bc i got a couple of long trips to take soon.

At those speeds your better off doing the speed limit on the interstate.

Gov't still says that 55 is the sweet spot.

My TL-P was really good between 75 and 80. It would drop off pretty good around 90, but for some reason it would go back up near 100 (yes i have done tose speeds for extended amounts of time late nite on my trips to florida) . I can get 30-32 at 80 with the 6 speed as well even though its reving 700 or so higher at that speed vs the auto

Same country you do, I think.

The geniuses in our gov't are begininng to advocate a return to a National 55 MPH Speed Limit. DOT says it will xxxx thousands of barrels of oil per day.

Therefore, the sweet spot, accoding to our gubmint, must be 55 MPH.

Try Autobahn speeds for a while and see what mileage that get's ya. There's a 3G owner in GER; his autobahn vids show something like 9 MPG @ 150 MPH.

My un-informed opinion is that the Sweet Spot for the TL's is probably in 60 - 70 MPH range.

I live in Germany and I enjoy utilizing the Autobahn. Unfortunately, more speed absolutely means less, way less mpg. Driving a constant 120mph got me about 15 mpg! While Driving 80-90 got me 21. I'm sure if I drove 75 I would see some gains, but who wants to do 75 when there is no speed limit!!!

above 76 is where inefficiency starts for most cars that are N/A. IF you are FI, then 100 MPH could be the sweet spot for all we know.

ON my 3rd gen, I get about 34 MPG going 74 with the a/c blasting and the music going.

The reason the gov't thinks 55 is the best is because almost all cars can be in their highest gear at 55 doing some pretty low RPM's.

Its not just about RPMs though. The faster you go, the more energy it takes to cut through the air. So even though your RPMs are low, the car is still working harder to push through the air.

But i have yet to test this theory, because i hate driving below 80mph

Unfortunately I'm one of those people that has slowed down due to the rise in gas. I always drove 80-90 and now I drive 65-75 and I found my tank to increase about 50 additional miles per tank and it only take an extra 3-5 minutes.

When I've driven up north to the casino on long trips and stuff I usually drive about 75-80 and that's when I've seen the best gas mileage for me anyway.

Yup, drag or wind resistance.

yea but that theory is somewhat distorted if i may say... your rpms will be higher since you hafta make the car work more to cut thru the air since you are tryin to keep the speed you are going at consistent. soo if your trying to keep 80 with head wind your rpms will be higher to keep it at that consistant speed where as if u were driving with the wind the rpms would be lower since u are not being dragged by the wind....

Unless the tq unlocks my experience has been 80mph = xrpm no matter the wind sitution. What may change is the a/f ratio going into the motor as teh thorttle has to be opened up to keep the 80mph.

RPMs have little to do with it. Throttle position does. Your RPM wouldnt be any higher with or without a head wind. RPM is a ratio of gearing and speed. Your throttle position will be higher or lower which will change your MPG. If your RPMs were higher you would be going faster. The more wind resistance the more throttle has to be applied. The more throttle DOES NOT mean more RPM. Think of wind resistance as a hill. The steeper the hill the more throttle you have to apply to maintain the same speed, RPMS dont go up with throttle (unless you change gears) unless you actually accelerate faster but the amount of throttle you apply to maintain said speed is much more.

Has anybody made comparisons between regular gas & reformulated? Reformulated is what's sold where I live.

I've always heard bad things about reformulated. I believe they add butane into the gasoline to help emissions. Im not sure but I believe this will reduce mileage.

It's fuel that's supposedly formulated to burn cleaner. Click this http://www.epa.gov/oms/rfg.htm for some info. I live in Louisville, KY.
