i have a engine that came with my blue tl that doesnt hold compression. two cylinder holds 175 but the other 4 are like 40 and 75. im planning on rebuilding it but i dont know what needs to be done to rebuild it. i dont wanna take it to a shop cause i wanna do this on my own since its just siting there. the engine has like 200xxx miles on it

I would think the first thing to do is get a factory shop manual if you don't already have one to see what's involved & what you will need.

Either way the motor will have to go to a machine shop for some of the work.

I would recommend a manual as there are a lot of steps involved in getting the correct bearings and testing them. There is more to it than just bolt a few parts on.

There are some good videos by "boxwrench.net" (some videos can be found on youtube) http://boxwrench.3dcartstores.com/Ba...g-DVD_p_8.html

did it have a severe overheating issue and blow the head gaskets- or an oil issue?
why is the compression ruined on most of the cylinders?
Thats first thing to know

It may be WAYYYYY cheaper- in the $600 range for a used motor at the wrecking yard
- put a new timing belt and water pump on it and drive
If yours has been overheated- there will likely be damage to both heads- might be able to fix at a machine shop but might need to replace them both $$$$

Overheated- bearings and races will be coked from burnt oil- thats bad

^^^ i always stress this when people commenting on getting most type of engine work done and it ends up costing inthe 750-1000 range to fix a motor.. rather then buying a perfectly good one from the bone yard for 500 bucks and dropping it in...

3.5RL was powered by a 3.5 L V6 engine, derived from the previous Legend's 3.2 L unit. The engine provided 210 hp (later 225 hp) nvm i found it thats pretty lame the stock 3.2 S motor makes more then that

^ thats the old one. u wont gain much hp but torque will go up significantly. ur quote is for the legends. u should be pushing close to 300 at the crank with the stroker kit and some minor bolt ons.

your not using that motor, you use the crank and rods from an odyssey or mdx, use the search button

Completely different motor. Do a SEARCH for 3.5. Built right it will make as much as a SC on low boost.

What direction do u want to go with the car? If u swap in a s motor ur going to need the 5spd trans, ecu, wiring harness. Might as well go with a 6spd swap then bc its gonna come out to be the same price. If u just need a beater car put in a 99 motor with ur 4spd that will last longer than the 5spd.

well i wanted to go with the 6speed but i have not come across one yet. thats why it will be easier to come across a s motor.

you gotta run the type S engine harness and the dash harness. for the dash harness you still gotta do some re-pin on it. and that will give you a big headache. and that's where im running problem with all the re-pinning right now =/

if you have the time to do this swap you should do it yourself. and that's what im doing right now since my 99 TL been sitting in the garage for over a yr now and i finally doing the 6 speed swap over the winter and slam it with aggressive fitment of rims

Its not that much different. They changed some of the connector ends for some of the different things like memory seats/vsa etc.. You just need to repin your old harness ends to the new.

I can do all of the above lol.. I've actually never done a TL swap or rebuild, but I'm sure it's not too different from other cars...

if u choose to do the type-s ecu you will need the type-s in cabin harness and the type-s engine harness to activate the secondary butterly.
you will also need to re-program your key.

all this will negate the savings that richies harness creates

i kept my 99 ecu and have the secondary butterly removed (open) bought an emanage and ill be tuning the engine.

u can run the engine without tuning BTW. check out my threads
