Whenever I start my car, the main. required signal flashes for a couple seconds than goes away. Should I be worried, or should I just be safe and take it to my dealer?

It's telling you to change your oil; check the manual. It also tells you how to reset the light yourself.

 

it starts to flash when you turn the car on when you are within 1000 miles or less of a scheduled maintenance... whether it be an oil change of a routing service.

If you are overdue for a service, the light will stay on to remind you instead of just flashing when you start the car.

The light you need to watch for is the check engine. The maintenance req. light is just there to serve as a reminder that cars don't run forever without proper maintenance.
