I always use Mobil1 5w30 with M1-104.

Pre-fill the filter, and the pour the rest into the engine, using 5 quarts. An extra .4 quart wouldn't hurt.

But lately, I've been thinking about switching to Royal Purple. I've heard good things about them, and they also have 5w20, which is recommended by Honda for our cars in the first place.

it wasnt recomended in all models. mines 5w30. the only reason they went to that weight oil was to help CAFE standards

If you read the owners manual, with a filter change, the total oil change is 4.6 quarts. That is what you should be putting back in. 5 quarts is a bit too much. Overfilling a crankcase is not the best idea since it will cause the oil to froth up too much. An extra 4/10 of a quart may not do too much, but I would rather be 4/10 low than high.. Mobil 1 0W-20 says on the bottle it is designed for Honda vehicles that require 5w-20. That is good enough for me..

the extra 4/10 wont hurt it and odds are ever place that you would bring it into would put in 5 qts. 172,000 miles here of 5 qts on 8-10k oil changes no problems! not enough oil is Never recomended

I was ready to argue with you, however, with 172K miles...I just can't!
My concern would be possibly blowing seals etc.

Why not just put extra oil to top off around 5k if 10k is the interval. Fresh oil helps even aged Mobil 1 oil to last longer. Plus the engine consume minor amount of oil anyway.

thats what we were talking about. just pouring in all 5 qts instead of measuring off 4.6. the extra.4 wont do any damage, and like you said the engine will consume some oil any ways so it wont hurt it to have slightly more.

if it were like 6qts poured in then it may make a difference.

Just one settle difference, additional oil is added midway, 5000 mile mark, instead at the start and not adding any oil afterward. Neptune oil study on Mobil 1 5w30 showed minor amount of fresh oil refreshed even aged oil and prolong oil life.

I suppose I can't argue either with 172k. I would just rather put in to correct full amount..
You guys mention using some oil- how much have you experienced losing? I was not using any at all between 3k intervals, but I did notice a little loss (maybe at most a 1/2 quart) after switching to the Synthetic at last change. So far I have 1500 miles at second run on the synthetic and it is still at the full mark. I have had a few older Accords in the past and they have never used really anything noticeable between 3k changes. Our Ford truck, now that's another story- probably a quart every 3k. I know the manufacturers say a quart every 3k is normal..

well for 1 you are consuming oil every thing does, its impossible not to, just not much.
2nd the most i ever used was 1/8 to 1/4 qt and that was a trip to florida 22 straight hrs 1 way X2 with a total of about 9k on the oil before changing.
changing the oil at 3k is a wast of money (just my ) especially when honda them selves recomends 7500
