Engine Cover
Engine Cover
I am wanting to paint my engine cover and just had a few questions. First how hard is it to take off the plastic engine cover? Is it just removing a few screws? or brackets? When you take the cover off, is there another cover or something under it? And for the painting, how much sanding do you want to do to get the paint to stay on? I have heard that you can get custom matched paint at auto parts stores..is that true? Just give them the paint number and thats it? Does the clear come mixed in with the paint or do you put on several layers of paint and then put on several layers or clear? Any info would be enjoyed, have had my car now since last sept and this will be my first mod to it....i just dont want to mess up my car or anything. thanks...................
here's a short how-to:
1. take off engine cover (4 screws holding the main cover), turn 2 "screws" counter-clock wise a quarter of a turn to take off the other piece covering the engine.
2. sand both pieces lightly with fine sand paper.
3. cover areas you dont want to paint
4. spray paint at least 3 coats, color of ur choice. (yes you can get custom colors).. wait at least 15 mins between each coat.
5. you can add a coat (or more) of clear for protection or gloss if you want.
6. remove tape over unpainted areas
7. put covers back on
8. enjoy
you can also use spray primer instead of sanding the covers..
hope this helps!

i would recomend getting a scotch scuff pad to do the sanding, always use a primer. it will allow better adhishion. also, find a auto motive paint store if you want a custom color (ie... your car color). and you need a base coat clear coat type paint if you want to use clear. clear coat IS NOT intended for use on top of single stage (the way most paint comes in a spray can)
