Question Engine Abuse?

I have been reading about some of you that have taken your RPM upto 5000+ and I was just curious if that's going to wear out the engine parts faster by doing this?

Even when I owned 3000GT I never took my car above 4000 RPM because I thought it might damage the engine.

Is TL-S designed to be driven at these high RPM?

After following the manufacturer-suggested break in period you can rev it to your heart's content. The redline is way up past 6000 because the engine was designed to rev that high safely. There are electronic safeguards to prevent you from over-revving the car. Shifting at 4000RPM does nothing but ruin potential fun.

Heck, the VTEC doesn't even kick in until I believe it's 5500 rpm. If they didn't expect you to rev it that high, why would they bother with VTEC at all?

Of course, I wouldn't redline it from every stoplight, but I've heard that it's actually good for the engine to rev it up every so often.

I dont own a TL-S, but I do own a 95 GSR w. 110K mi on it. I think it has bounced off the rev limiter a million times at least. I regularly rev to 7500, and you know what....I have never had an engine problem. My last car was a 87 Civic Si, I rev the crap out of that thing too, I sold it to my mechanic who loved it cause it ran so well, it had 220K mi on it. Personally I dont thinkyou can break one of these without using a power adder (ie. boost or NOS).

just my $0.02

The worst thing you can do to an engine is to lug it. That means driving in to high a gear like up hill under 2000 RPM. You can't do that in automatic but you can in SS. Watch the way the automatic shifts at full throttle. It does a pretty good job and should give you clue about how to use the SS. The main advantage of the SS is being able to downshift and hold a lower gear throuh a corner. That being said I would not advocate holding the car near the red line continuosly either.

Driving the car hard is good for the engine and keeps it clean. Lugging damages rod bearings and also, to some extent, wrist pin bearings and main bearing. It can also lead to detonation which melts pistons and burns valves.

You bought an Type-S so why not enjoy it. Keeping the RPM down gives you less performance that a regular TL.

Can you explain how the computer learn and adapt to the driver's habits?

You wouldn't make a very good formula one driver.

I stretch the engine whenever possible. I don't want the computer thinking I only drive slow and the engine to wear in for slow driving. Just make sure the car is warm.
