EGR valve problem: does it affect perfomance?
EGR valve problem: does it affect perfomance?
I just wanted to know if the EGR valve problem known to happen on our TL affects the engine'S performance. I believe it does cuz if the flow is insufficient the engine cannot logically work at full potential. Before I had that problem I would not have a problem at least keeping up with my dad's 04' TL, but now he can definitly pull on me without a problem... i had an extra person in the car too, and my system in the trunk, but I believe the EGR valve problem (TCS/ABS/CHK ENG lights are on) is affecting my car's performance..
Let me hear your thoughts about that.
thx
justin

Once the code is on, the computer automatically runs rich to save the engine.
It's not the actualy flow of the EGR that is hurting the performance; rather, it's the OBDII that is running it rich, trying to save the engine.

alright so im doing this now. it seems to be a little more involved then i first thought. i think i need a allen head screw driver to get the front and back of the IM off. all i corrent? i also have to remove the intake and all associated hoses and stuff.
as you can see, i have never dealt with engine work before.
edit: when i took the top cover off, there is oil in the area below. thats normal right?

yeah, cleaning may help, but what i've discovered, my EGR valve wasnt too good, so I replaced, my mileage greatly improved, and everything is fine.
@cur@, are your cylinders misfiring? is the engine shaking?

in most cases the egr valve is good. its just the ports are plugged up and the computer is trying to compensate for it. Id do a good cleaning of every thing first and see how that helps. Typically a bad egr will get stuck in a certin positon (usually open) and your idle will get Really bad (it will run like you just slapped a big set of race cams in the car)

But just the thought having aftermarket cams in my car makes me
.A company needs to step up and take on the task. I would get 'em for sure.
that would ALSO explain the funny idle!! wow... i cant believe i just found the source of all my problems
teknoking: yeah the check engine code was a cylinder misfire.. probably cause by the insufficient airflow that would make the cylinder overheat..

what a coincidence, my gf's 2001 Accord V6 is having this same exact problem.
fsttyms1: you said that in most cases the EGR Valve is good, and that i should just try to clean it out for her? How much do you think a shop would charge to do this? or anyone in houston willing to help me with it? I am mechanically inclined... So how hard would this process be on a scale of 1-10, 1 being a light bulb change and 10 being a complete engine swap/assembly.

on a scale of 10 this is a 2. its Very easy and only requires BASIC hand tools.
here are acouple threads on it, im sure the accord is very similar in design

Could this be under warranty if the car only has 70k on it?
From the pictures..you just basically take the TB off and spray it down with carb cleaner correct? What part is the actually "EGR Valve" because thats the code it was throwing. I apologize for my incompentency but i just want to get everything straight before i take it apart. Thanks again.
the EGR valve is the weird funnel like pipe in front of the throttle butterfly. you cant really see it in the pictures of any of the threads, but its there.. hmm, i'll try to look for pics of an engine that it shows..
also, its not a warranty thing. the only thing covered til 100k is the tranny..
its RARELY the egr valve itself that causes the problem. all you have to do is clean out the egr hole in the intake manifold and unplug the battery for a while.. this clears the check engine light, and takes care of the problem..

the rusty piece circled is the EGR
