eek...eek...eek noise

Hi all,

Needed some help identifying and fixing a problem. My driver side back weird has started making this shrieking sound after driving for a while. It sounds like metal on metal shriek, eek eek eek eek. Very consistent sound that is heard during rotation of the tire that u can pinpoint when its going to happen. I suspect theres some sort of rust or something between the wheel and the hub. I attached some photos to help...

This two pics are the rear driver...

And these two are thr front driver which has no squeaks, no rust for comparison...

I wanted to just throe some wd40 on there and see if it goes away. But was told otherwise that it will affect the braking capabilities and other hardware. Any ideas on fix/lube/ideas would be greatly appreciated. I dont think my wheel will fall off, but im nervouse about all the squeaking it does.. thank you!!

I have the same rotors , they do rust so it might be rusty but I would check out the surrounding area, is everything tight ? (Rotors, calipers) are your lugs tightened all the way ? One time my tire was making a strange sound and it turned out being the lugs because the wheel was loose.

Stuck Caliper... Replace Sliding Bolts (CHEAP like 8 bucks a Set) and Lube the shit out of them before installing.
OR
You can just lube your existing Sliders but since they are so Cheap you can do the job right.. Some Sliding Kits have the Rubber Boots which can be torn or damaged.

i tried tightening the lug nuts, sound is still there. Stuck caliper sounds like a great idea. But would that cause noise over the entire rotation of the wheel? I tested it whike someone driving about 5 mph and me walking next to the car. The squeak only occurs at a certain point where the wheel rotates probably about every second. (Example is like only when the air cap area of the wheel turns to the top and squeaks, noise goes away and squeaks again when the air cap area returns to that specific spot again.

I will try the lube. What brand or type of lube do you recommend?

Thanks

Check the spring clip on the back of the brake pads in the caliper. sometimes the spring clip gets flattened out a bit and the edge of the rotor will touch it and make a high pitched squeeling sound.

If it's not the caliper bolts or worn pads, then check the backing shield plate.

I do the Autozone cheapo (like 0.99 cent) Brake Caliper Lube! Its always at the counter in a Small Black soft Bag...

Also +1 On the Caliper presion plate, If its installed wrong it can scratch the Rotor at given times making that sound.. Use a Flat Screwdriver and press the Little clips into the edges (They must sit Flat and be true to the Caliper).

Could also be a bearing?

I had a busted caliper once and my pads were pretty rusty....never made a squeak. Don't spray WD-40 all over it now

New update.. now with the car stopped that same wheel with the squeaking noise makes a click click click noise. Theres also the smell of burnt rubber/fluid. No other wheel has those symptoms. Can it be possible one wheel dried out of brake fluid? Going to shop tomorrow morning... jus wanted to get an idea...

So stopped it does Click Click? It could be a Very VERY Hot Rotor... Have you Replaced the Sliding Bolts Already?

So firestone figured out the problem i was hoping it'll b jus the sliding bolt or brake pad plate that needed to be put back. But thr problem was the entire caliper was seized onto the brake pad and rotors. The rotors were completely glazed over due to the constant application of the pads (causing the burning smell when i stopped), and the clicking noise from the really hot rotor from being constantly applied by the seized caliper. Bottom line, flush your brake fluid every so often to get rid of any contaminants. These contaminentd will affect your investment in the long run. Dont know why it only occurred on one side tho.

Doing both sides, so 2 remanufactured calipers 120ea, 2 centrix brake rotors 60$ ea, 2 brake pads 60$, and 300 worth of labor equals about 700$. I probably couldve waited and get a different brand for rotors and pads... but driving around knowingly with failing brake components and 8 mo old baby and wife in rear jus didnt go hand in hand. Get it done once and right...

Thanks everyone for your input and help. This site continues to be of great help and advice in the ten years i been on here! thanks.

True. Labor probably will be 300-400 thats whats most places charge for these jobs about 2-3 hrs. I knew i was paying a bit more and for a brand i might not want, but the piece of mind is what count for me. Oh and the time it'll take for searching a shop etc etc. Im probably out like 200 bucks but i save some time and i know i cam bring it right back with the 2 yr warranty if i had any problems. Thanks for the heads up tho. I actually bought the brakemotive rotors and pads for 150. Calipers for 50 bucks? Thats really.. inexpemsive no? Why?

Calipers normally have a "core" charge. Chances are your shop will pocket the difference !

Yeah DaNNiebOixDD, I hear ya......been there awhile back. Sometimes ya gotta prioritize your time, especially with a family. However, the price of convenience is rather expensive as you'll find out, so keep with us and plan some future "DIY's" to save some hard earned cash for feeding the family. Good luck with the baby !
