ok, my 99 TL is @ 105.5k miles. plus the dealer recently diagnosed an emissions problem and said i needed a new canister vent shut valve. so i'm due for the regular maintenance and this emissions repair. my car is now a step child and i wanna trade it before it's due for a 4th tranny! (i had the tranny replaced @ 70k miles on 8/03 and 95k miles on 11/04). however, i can't upgrade till after september, due to financial plans. doin an average of 1k miles / month in boston, do u think it's safe to go without any maintenance/repairs (except oil change) till october? anyone had a timing chain die on him/her?

If the belt pops, don't try to restart your engine. If you are turning enough revs, you will bend stuff inside. I'd say you are o.k. for no more than 120 K miles.

thanks for the input, guys. if the car never had tranny issues, i woulda kept it till maybe 2007! it was my baby when i got it. but after 2 tranny replacements, it has become another b word. i'm not sure if i wanna risk having the ride with my extended warranty expired. i respect u guys who have hung onto urs. i just lost confidence in the TL

Pistons coming in contact with the valves = complete destruction.
Let me find the pictures of my friend's B18C5 when the exhaust cam gear slipped while dyno-tuning and sent it 40 degrees advanced.

i thought the J32 was a non-interference engine. anyone? for some reason i remember it coming up in a conversation previously here. as long as i'm right then it won't matter if his timing belt breaks.
if i am wrong and it *is* an interference engine, then yes, he will be fucked 8 ways from sunday. although i don't think it is that often that a timing belt breaks on a TL/accord/honda/acura/etc. i am under the impression they're pretty reliable.

If they wernt that reliable honda wouldnt use them! Sure you hear about horror stories of them breaking (like rob posted pictures) but there are the same type of stories about chains doing the same (along with any other type of failure) Shit happens.. Look how often in the manual honda calls for maintance of other things on the car knowing well that it will last twice as long, and the timing belt is only scheduled for 105.

bLAQUEmALE,
My 99 TL has 101000 miles. I just had my timing belt done at an independent Mechanic in Boston aresa for $535 (belt and water pump with labor) the guy was awesome and very professional. he used to wrok for Acura dealership. I was going to take my car to the acura dealership but they wanted close to$900....
let me know if yo want his number, karlos12000@yahoo.com

I JUST hit 99k miles on my 2002 TLS and plan on doing the 105 tune up early. I have a special extended bumper to bumper warranty (dealer specific for 100k miles) and plan on combining this service with warranty stuff (like swapping front seats, reparing B-pillars and changing out dash mounted light bulbs). Similar to fsttyms1, I'm probably going to drive my TL till it dies.
My question is, since I'm doing the timing belt, where can I purchase the UR crank pulley? I may be able to convince my dealer to throw that labor in for cheap. I want to buy from a trusted vender who can also sell me the right belts too.
