Driving Style Prob

Hey all, im just wondering if you never go past lets say 45mph in the TL for like 4 years and then suddenly after that 4 years u start going way past 45mph and using the sportshift. The reason for this is that my mom drives the TL and im only 13 ( flame if you must ) and she works in a hospital and sees all those patients who got F*ed up driving on the freeway. So anyways she never goes freeway and she never drives past 45 or even 40 for that matter. Btw she never ever ever will use the sportshift. So im just wondering if when i get the car in 3-4 years and i start going freeway 60+ and using sportshift will the car mess up or have any problems cuz its so used to the way my mom drives? sorry im just a little kid but hey everyone starts gettin curious and enthusiastic bout cars at some age right?

I won't disrespect you, and as a matter of fact, I was like you in your age, believe or not, I was practising heel and toe technique with my imaginary stick, brake, gas and clutch at 14, which I had never ever sit in a manual car 5 years later.

I'm proud of you, and very pleased that you would like to know more about car stuff.

Back to your question: Yes, your mom's driving will definately do some damage of your mom's car, I suspect since she's afraid of highway driving, she probably never ever rev the car past 4000 rpm, which, since the engine always stay at low speed and low working rpm, it would likely to have more carbon deposit... in long run the engine will have a tendency of slower acceleration and reluctunt to rev...etc.
Remedy for it is, if you have any uncle/ aunt, cousins that your mom trusted their driving, have them take the car out periodically and drive a little more aggresively to the engine.. that would help getting those carbon deposit out.

As far as sport shift, I wouldn't expect to have any problem since it acutually didn't make any difference in the transmission mechanically...

SeCsTaC, here's another remedy for your mom's situation, buy only do so after the engine's warmed up, You can have her staying at 3rd gear on her city driving, (no need to drive like that everyday but only maybe once per 2-3 weeks.). If she usually coasting downhill, then have her hold the gear there and let the engine rev. That is, as far as I can imagine to eliminate the carbon deposit problem. oh, don't forget that you don't need to be stay in the red line area when doing that, I believe as long as she does rev above 4000 rpm occasionally, it will be enough...

One more advise, have the dealer check and see if the engines/transmission fine whenever your mom takes the car to dealer for service. I believe the dealer can check if the engine got carbon deposit, and also, they have some machine that do the flushing thing to clean up the engine.

hrm... i think ill right a fake report on that particular problem on MS Word, make it all fancy and sophisticated and show it to her. heres a draft * If your a easy driver n` do not drive on the freeays, you could damage the engine in the long run. This is applied to all cars, so it isn't your car. The reason for this is if you cruise the city at around 40 MPH tops, then you'll never use your car's 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. So in the long run, youll damage those gears, due to carbon deposits in the gears and the related parts. So if one day you do decide to go on the freeay, those gears have the possibility of being inoperable. So please, every once in awhile drive your car on the freeay n` use your 3-5 gears * lol hows that. its da best my widdle brain can do :p wish me luck guys.

the Carbon deposit I'm refering to isn't in the transmission, and please, don't do that, even though your mom would probably never find out the real problem, but when your mom drive even at 40mph... the transmission did have full use of 3,4, 5 th gear... I'm a little disapointed that you start mixing up engine and transmission... but, I guessed, being a thirteen year old, it's really a little hard to understand...

So I don't think your fake report would work... You are still a 13 years old kid, I don't think you can fool your mom. She may find out from the language you used, or even your gramma, typo... Or, she just bring that to a mechanic or some car people she knew... then, I guess it won't do you any good.

I have the Best Idea for you, print this whole forum out, let your mom look at it, and just tell her up front that you don't want her to lost money on her asset (the TL, in this case).

There is nothing you did or you mentioned, until you wanted to "cheat" your mom with fake letter.

You should even ask your mom to come in here and then we can tell her what we do to care for the car.

Ha, ha... I thought this thread was pretty funny. My son's 12 and he's already checking out my ride, too! But I told him this car's got too much power for a rookie driver -- and that I'll probably get him something smaller and used (and slower) so that he can practice on that one.

Good luck with your Mom!

my mom's at the age of 55 and she drives really unaggresively, and of course, no highway for her either. she does city driving under 50MPH I would say. But I told her about the carbon deposit and the long term damage to the car, she actually drives a bit faster and sometimes when she merges into traffic, she would floor the car. You should talk to her about it or find some articles for support. she'll understand.
