Don't put ur gear in D5 while driving under 50-60mph..

D5 is consider an overdrive.... it will make jerky shifting...if u drive aggressively.... under 50-60 the rpm is lower than 1... I heard something about keeping it around the 2 range while driving is better. shift to d5 when u r driving in the highway or abouve 50-60.
I'v noticed that too..when i set to d5...the shifting is wierd..when driving local roads..under 50... I usually set to d4..no problem at all...then to d5 once get on highway.. this is regarding to ppl complaining about d5 having jerky tranny shifting.

Yes, I've been doing that since the first week I had the car when I noticed the tranny being confused between two gears when lightly cruising at medium speeds.

There is just one problem I have with this, I keep forgetting I'm not in 5th when I'm on the highway

Or just drive in SS all the time. I always do, it doesnt take much work at all, and it always shifts down for you if you drive ***** shift . Best substitute until the supposed 2003 5-spd.

If and when the manual tranny comes out for the TLS, you guys think we'll be able to swap out the automatic and retrofit the manual?! Just curious!!

Anything is possible, as long as you have alot of $$'s to burn.

Even if it's possible, it would not be worth it IMO. Alot things need to be done to it.

I noticed this too. And all this time I thought it was only my car.

I've never noticed the problem. If I'm in D5, it won't shift into 5th until I go over 45. I will hold in 5th for quite a while if I am slowly slowing down, but if I even tap the gas, if feels like it dowshifts to 4th or 3rd and holds that gear until I let up on the gas.
SS is fine, but not always better than D5. Sometimes the stupid phone rings, or you don't want to spill your mocha, or your woman is being clingy and wants to hold your hand...

SimTypeS,

dood..try shifting to D5,....step on gas padel....and reach about 60 then slow down..and then accelerate hard...then slow..then accelerate...u will notice the the jerkiness of ur tranny...
cause when u set to D5 it usually tries to reach low rpms as soon as possible...and when u want to accelerate..sometimes it's a bit slow..in reacting.... our tranny is weak :I
D5 when 60 runs around 1000s rpm..that's very low... when setting to D4..no problem at all. u want to keep the rpm range around 2s-3s...when driving on local. unless u r going over 70-80 mph!!!

one important thing...notice how SS won't let u shift to D5 when u r not over 50 or 60...hm..around there..

Shoot, when I'm just putzing along a flat-as-a-board country road with a speed limit of 30 (which is strictly enforced) I use SS to put the car in 5th gear at 35 mph. If you drop to 34 mph, it will automatically downshift into 4th. If you cruise at 34 mph, you can't get 5th in SS. Anyway, there is enough torque for me to cruise and I don't feel any "jerkiness" unless it's the torque convertor locking and unlocking, but I wouldn't call that jerky.

I leave mine in D5 all the time... it won't actually upshift to 5th until you're going fast enough such that the engine won't lug when it shifts. For my car, this happens just before 50mph. Under that, it will go no higher than 4th. I don't notice any odd jerkiness doing this.

Even in SS, it won't let you upshift/downshift if the resultant gear change would either lug or over-rev the engine.

I let my tranny do its own thinking. Works out just fine.

I don't have problems when driving around congested streets in D5 at <50 MPH. Yes, the acceleration isn't great when you stomp on it, but when traffic is slow, I don't really care.

I drive in SS mode about 80% of the time, and I do put the car into D5 as soon as I can for urban crawling.

city001... go easy... on the... periods, man... try to... write... using... conventional punctuation... ok? (just a little stab, no offense intended).

Maybe my transmission has learned my driving style, and doesn't lug as much.
Besides, if I have it in D5, it's probably just as easy or easier to shift to D3 as it is to shift from SS-5 to SS-3. And I would put money on it that it's easier to shift from D5 to 2nd (straight down the bracket) than it is to go from SS-5 to SS-2. :::VROOM :::
