Doing a jump start for some others is bad for the car?

Nothing's wrong with jump starting a car with your car. Just make sure you plug your positive to the battery, and negative to a ground, or else you risk fizzling your computer.

actually the real reason to make the ground connection to the frame other than the battery has nothing to do with messing up a computer. the real reason you do it is because on the older batteries with the vent caps on top. when you make the last connection between cars there is usually a spark. when a battery has gone dead it realeases hyrdogen fron the vent caps. if you make the last connection on the battery the spark can cause the battery to explode. you can connect the cables to the dead battery posts as long as the other end of the jumper cables is not connected to anything yet. as a good rule of safety make the last connection to the car with a good battery and always connect the negitive cable to a ground connection away from the battery so any sparks wont be near the escaping hydrogen on top of the battery.

Preludeshfan, that too...in addition, I don't clearly remember the other reason, but I believe it had to do with the different amperages of the starter/alternator, that if one draws too much power, you can fizz the electrics.. I don't remember exactly what it was tho..

hmmm... I dunno. None of my friends have cars that are ghetto nuff for the batteries to die. Our cars usually come with some precautionally features that shut off power when the battery drainage is detected.

By the way, all lead-acid car batteries are capable of emitting some hydrogen whether they're charged or depleated. So just be careful with any sparks around any batteries. I'd hate to see someone post a picture of an exploding TL.
