A bypass valve goes between the throttle body and air filter. Its basically a wire frame covered with a foam material. If they car were to suck up water, it would bleed out through the foam.

If your intake filter is ever submersed enough to take in water, the intake will redirect the the air flow from the by-pass valve, due to the lack of air flow from the submersed intake filter.......I have been wanting to get one for the longest time on my AEM, but always find something else to buy! LOL, I hope that this clarifies what it does for you

do they work? they probably do. but is it worth it? that's another question.

you really DO NOT need a bypass valve unless you're driving in knee high water. under most driving conditions, you will not need it. just use common sense when you're driving in hard rain; don't drive in puddles and go easy on the pedal so your filter does not suck as hard.

they work, as TOPHER33884 described that how it works, brother had it on his car for about 2 years and never was in deep water, and it could rain hard in chicago like the past summer. u could save your self a few buck and go one or two streets over and not get into any water. and it kinda looks out of place in the engine bay.
