Do Shocks need to be changed with springs?

I was told by several ppl, including the shop i'm getting my car lowered at, that I should lower my car and replace shocks at the same time. Is this a must? It seems alot of ppl here have lowered their car without changing shocks. What are the side effects of not changing the shocks with springs?

Depends on what springs you have.. some may cause more wear on your stocks.. Not a must tho..

but one thing that comes to mind is that they take out the shocks anyway when installing springs.. so the install cost of shocks later on would be eliminated if you did them both at the same time..

I would recommend shocks if you are getting aftermarket springs, especially if the drop is more than 1", which it probably is. The ride will be much more precise and it won't bounce as much........your stock shocks aren't gonna last long once the car is lowered unless they are pretty new and/or doing a minimal drop

I'll just use the stockers for now. I might sell my car within 2 yrs so the shocks might be able to outlast 2 yrs. If I keep more than that, when they wear out I'll get some Koni yellows

You should be okay. How many miles are on your stock shocks? If it's more than 40 or 50k (at the most) I would think about changing them out anyways, cause they probably won't last another two years. If the car is pretty new, you should be alright.

You would of save some labor cost if you did the shocks and springs at the same time.

Shocks should last a long time. We changed our Accords struts at 160k and it still rode the same which was disappointing.

with HR OE springs I'd stick with the stock shocks. why change if they are functional. shocks last a long time. switch them out when they turn 8.

The best investment to make is a coilover purchase. Fully adjustable and (if you buy quality) will last you the life of the car.

I have H&R sport springs..1.75 drop...and I have the stock shocks in my car. I have nothing but the best ride, never bottoms out either..I have absolutely no reason to change out my stock shocks. That is of course because my car is only 8 months old, and I only have 8000 miles on my shocks. I was told by several mechanics that I will be fine until at least 30,000 miles, even with the drop. Who really knows, but until I start bottoming out all the time, I won't be replacing shocks because it's just not necessary.

I got H&R Race springs with stock shocks too, my shocks are still fine after 1 year. Of course, the shocks will have to replaced sooner (rather than later). So you can get by with stock shocks for a few years (but it also depends on how much you drive as well as how good/bad the roads you drive are). As for your front tires wearing out, dude, did you get your wheel alignment? Wheel alignment is a must, or else you will get premature tire wear. Also, remember to rotate your tires, as that will help to keep your tires life longer (unless you are purposely trying to wear out your stock tires in order to get some better ones).
Camber kit is not absolutely necessary IMO, but if you got $, it would be a good investment.

get question Shimbo519...
This has been on my mind as well.
I put on Eibach Pro-kit springs after 34,000 miles and recently slapped on 235/40/18. I am starting to feel the car feel alittle bouncy on the freeway. My rear tires rub a little on those little dips too. The shop I got to recommended adjustable KONI shocks
"yellows"...They quoted me $746 (front & back) and $1014 w/labor & parts.
I will upgrade the shocks... based on everyones' comments, Do you know if this is a fair price - for Koni's and labor???

Why pay twice when you can get it done all at once. Unless you are not keeping your car for longer than 2 years.

That seems a little high to me.......I think you can get Konis from here for somewhere around 560 or so. The labor is a little high too. Konis are really good shocks, but I think the Tokico Illuinas are a better bargain at around 450. I have the Illuminas paired with comptech springs and I couldn't be happier. It is DEFINATELY worth it to change out to performance shocks. You don't know how bad your ride was before until you upgrade to some performance oriented shocks. The stockers are okay, but they lack adjustability and the ride isn't as comfortable in my opinion. I have them set on 3 for daily driving, which is right in the middle. When I go on a road trip I set them to one and the ride is really soft. You don't have to upgrade the shocks (at least not now) but it is definately a good idea to do so, you will be much happier with your suspension setup.

I'm sure shimbo519 like me appreciate all of the fedback...

KJ32 - the shop that put on the eibachs said that he could not get the konis, tokicos in time - I think he was full of bs - but I could not drive around with the stock springs anymore.

Great feedback again !- I'll have new shocks on as soon as I can get better prices.
