DIY: Removing wipers and plastic below them for cleaning
It's not much, but I decided to take pictures while doing it and throw this together in case someone else ever needed it.
This is a DIY to get off the plastic lining where the hood meets the windshield. I did it to get acorns and other random things out of where the wiper motors are and to just clean in general.
Tools Needed:
14mm wrench
Thin flathead
You need to remove your wipers first. The way the hood and wipers meet is a little tricky so I brought the wipers up like you do when you are changing the blades. You do this by getting in the car and turning the wipers on and when they are at the very top you turn your keys to the off position and the wipers will stay there, then you can flip them up. I strongly recommend marking EXACTLY where the wipers are when you are taking them off because there are a bunch of little teeth where the wipers hook on and you need to have it just right for them to not go off the windshield when in their full range of motion.
Pop the hood and use the 14mm wrench to remove both wipers. You may need to pry them back and forth a bit and get them loose after you get the nut off.
Use the thin flathead to remove the 3 clips from right where the plastic piece meets the windshield.
Remove the weather stripping from the front of the plastic piece. To do this, you can pull where the clip is.. it really helps to push from the bottom like shown below.
If you pull too hard you can pull the clip from out of the weather stripping and the clip stays where it was.
If that happens, you just get the clip out and replace it into the hole in the weather stripping like shown.
Once you have the weather stripping off, you start prying from where the weather stripping just was. Start on one side and get it going, then work your way across. It helps to lean across the motor and use the strut bar for an armrest.
When you get it loose, you’ll need to bend it to fit it around the hood supports to be able to get it out. Here is the plastic piece halfway out revealing the wiper motors and edge of the windshield.
All clean
Now, just put it back together in reverse order
