Post Distance To Empty? (2003)

Hey,

Is there some kind of modification that I can add to my car to tell me exactly how many miles of gas are left? Like a digital number display or an extra gauge or something. Any suggestions help.

Thanks!

not really because it would change on your driving habits. weight in the vehicle. weather you have the windows open/ AC turned on. many things.

every time that you have to fill your tank up reset your trip meter and learn how many miles you can go before your light comes on.

Add a pen, a 3x5 card, and a calculator.

I keep them in the glove compartment and calculate my mpg almost every fill up. It takes about 30 seconds. As the other poster said, your mpg changes due to a variety of factors.

I've even heard the suggestion of filling up at the same gas station if you can because gas quality can vary from station to station, although I'm convinced that there's so much variability going on at so many different points in the process that it doesn't matter.

As soon as the low fuel light comes on, fill the tank. Note how many gallons you fill, and subtract that from the capacity of your tank, and you'll know how many gallons are left when the warning light comes on -- multiply that by your average MPG and you'll know how many miles you could drive.

BTW, it's best to keep your tank on the full side, not the empty side.

Also, and just a friendly suggestion -- this has been posted about before, so you might do a search to find out more.

well that and gas can change at every gas station from fill up to fill up. so even going to the same gas station isnt that perfect.

Yeah my MPG ranges sometimes im in the low 20's and sometimes more in the mid 20's the best I have ever seen was 26.3 or something like that, but that was a mix not pure highway. I would think you could push 30 in this car if you drove straight highway.

I was wondering this too. My dad rented a volvo s60 when his car was in the shop and it would have a little digital display in the instrument cluster that would say how many more miles I could go and how many MPG im getting. I think it would be neat if someone made a gauge like that.

Hours dont mean any thing. How many miles is what you need to learn as to how far it will go. Need to start learning what kind of mileage your getting per tank so that you can estimate how far it will go once the light is on.

I've heard it's best not to allow the tank to get near empty (for more than just the obvious reason). Especially on older cars, any sediment at the bottom of the tank may be picked up and get into the fuel lines, injectors, etc. Don't know how much truth there is to this.

Where do you think the fuel pick up is in the tank anyway? Plus there is a sock filter on the end of the pump to keep any thing out of the pump that shouldnt be

Yes, it's common practice not to let it go to empty because of crap at the bottom of the tank. However, as Kris said, it doesn't really matter because of the sock filter. Also, if you have been the only owner of the car, and have made a habit of going full-to-empty it's entire life like I have, you can bet the gas has never setteled ont he bottom of the tank long enough to leave crap behind.

As for the subject of the thread, I have pushed my car to absolute-empty more than once, and I know I can still get 80-100 miles out of the tank when that light comes on, if im not mashing the shit out of the throttle.

Keep in mind, when monitoring fuel economy, the dealer recommends recording it by measuring mileage from a full tank down to one quarter, because past one quarter of a tank, the kneedle falls faster and less accurately past that point.

I'm so confused.

Everyone keeps saying stuff about gas settling on the bottom of the tank, or there being sediment on the bottom of the tank.. come on people, where do you think the pump is getting gas from? It's not sucking gas from the top of the tank. The pump pickup is at the lowest place in the tank, so to think if you run empty that you're getting some different, mysterious, dirty gas is absolutely stupid. The gas is coming from the same place when you are FULL as it is when you are EMPTY.

Yep, you're the first person that determines how many hours they can drive on a certain amount of fuel instead of how many miles. If you drove slower, you could drive even longer. Now that I think about it, if you parked the car and let it run, think of how many hours you could, er, sit.

It's the new system of measuring hours per gallon rather than miles per gallon. Where have you been? /sarcasm

If I fill up the moment the gas light comes on, my tank holds 13.7 gallons. It is a 17.17 gallon tank, so about 3.5 gallons are unaccounted for.

The cost to fill up would be totally dependent on the price per gallon.

How many miles you get is all Dependant on how many MPGs your averaging.

Yea with my driving I average about 22mpg so that light comes on well before I need to fill up. Hey if worst comes to worst my insurance includes roadside assistance and i can have them bring me some gas.

Did you fill it? If so, how many gallons did it take?

I had it on my 300M, it was a cool feature, it also had real time gas mileage calculator too. Oh and it has a compass too!!! LOL which reminds me, need to do my rear view mirror mod with the compass built in. Sheesh another busy summer!!

i get exactly the same as the EPA ratings.... 19city, 29 highway... (sometimes less on the highway since i usually drive around 130KM/H - 150km/h average )

and so i just go by how many litres i fill it by... so if i fill it for 20 litres.. thats 160KM my call will go CITY FOR SURE!! .. and its been 99.99% accurate since i've been doing it. (about 6 months so far) ...

now.. i was thinking... how to take the LEXUS system and put it into our cars.. all we really need is something that connects it to the ODO/FUEL tank thingy.... i hope someone figures this out.. or if tehre is an aftermarket product.

Drive your car long enough and pay attention to how much you toss in to fill up (resetting the trip) and you will know exactly how much your getting and how much further you can go. I know i can just by looking at the gauge

Yes on both accounts. There is such a device you can add that will tell you current mpg, distance/fuel/time till empty and a host of other features.

It's a digital gauge the hooks up directly to your OBDII connector and reads all the signals from the computer and calculates everything you need or might want to know about mileage, speed, fuel consumption, whatever. Even acts as a gauge to give you actual accurate readings on a host of different readings. and you can display 4 items at a time.

And for only $169.95....
Sounds pretty cool if you ask me.
I just might have to get one if I can custom mount it and make it look good!

I simply did a search on Yahoo/Google and found it. Compatible with nearly all newer OBDII vehicles. It's call a ScanGaugeII.

Check it out: www.scangauge.com
