Dif between vtec, & i-vtec

Can anyone describe technically the difference between vtec, and i-vtec?? I understand that the new TSX has it, and our car doesn't?

VTEC is simply the ability to switch to a different set of cam lobes. i-VTEC adds to the standard VTEC the ability to alter the phasing of the cam.

Basically it is the timing of the opening of the valves in relation to the piston position. Many cars, especially older cars, have a fixed timing of the valves. But with i-VTEC the ECU can control the valve timing within a within of X degrees.

Many manufacturers have their own form of this concept. But not all alter the lift through switching of cam lobes.

So i-vtec sounds way better then. It can make a motor feel stronger at all rpm ranges, where vtec will only work at a certain rpm... correct? I heard the tsx engine feels incredible torquey for it's size because of this feature... must add it to the new TL.

That is correct, it does allow for a better torque curve and more linear power delivery over the standard VTEC.

Not nearly as good as BMW's ValveTronic coupled with VANOS though!!!
