Did 10w-30 cause this?

Just a few days ago I changed my oil, but changed it with some Mobil 1 10w-30 instead of 5w-30 and I didn't realize it until AFTER I finished...(clumsy I know... ) Some mebers told me on this board that it won't be a problem til winter, just have it changed before then. Well tlast night I notice it ran a little rougher. Not dramatically, but it was so quiet 2 days ago that I notice it very clearly. I can hear the engine a little more from inside the cabin with all the windows closed and A/c off. It doesn't feel any rougher. If it weren't for the audible engine noise, you wouldn't know it was on. Just a week and a half ago before I changed my oil, a few people commented on how they didn't know my car was on after I started it because it was so smooth and so quiet. And even though I knew it was on, I have to agree...there wasn't many signs given that the car was on. Which I like. Now, I sounds like I just took off another airbox resonator (even though I already took mine off). Do you guys think the 10w-30 is what is causing this? Or should I look into something else? It seems to have the same amount of power. Very minimal loss if any....I can;t really notice it...anyone...help???

Unless you got a bad batch of motor oil, I highly doubt that it could be the oil.

The oil looked fine to me...typical synthetic motor oil...Mobil 1 is a good brand, correct?

Yes. Mobil1 10W30 for summer and 5W30 for winter is the only oil I put in my car and it runs perfectly fine.

I have switched back and forth a couple times in error myself and nothing ever happened. My 4x4 toyota gets whatever oil i have on hand and it runs like a top as well (I could be lucky).

Well now...I guess it can't be the oil...I doubt it would be the tranny I'm hearing too, huh? Cuz I should only be hearing it while the car is engaging gears, but I hear it the most noticeably when I sit at a red light or something. Would any of my other fluids be causing this, it's been about 2 weeks since I last checked, should be fine?

How can you tell it is a bad batch? Once I bought some Mobil 1 Syn and it was darker than what I had previously used.

Did you get gas at an different station or brand recently? You may have some that is dirty or has a funny mix.

Actually you should run 5w30 in the summer and 0w30 in the winter if you live where the temp goes below 0 a lot.

If you live in the warmer states then 5w30 year round.

I believe someone in another thread stated the opposite...are you sure 5w-30 is for thw summer? 5w-30 is more viscous or less? Sorry...I can't seem to find the old thread...

i used 10w 30 mobil1 full syn. in my tl (on accident too) and i notice im a little slower then my friends car now (he has a tls too). we use to be neck to neck but now since i put the 10w 30 in, he pulls a little harder in 2nd and 3rd gear. not a big difference but its still 1/2 a car. after 3rd were going the same speed but he is still ahead

Have you considered that the slightly rougher running may be due to carbon deposits in the intake? Apparently the EGR design in the TL tends to cause carbon deposits in the intake. Check out this thread, it's quite revealing!

dont be worried about any thing. it could be gas. i run 10w30 all the time and my engine is smooth. yes the thicker teh weight oil the more drag on the engine but its not going to hurt any thing. ive used 50 weight in my 4cyl hondea before (when auto xing and racing) the oil weight wont hurt any thing (unless its like -50 out side then the thicker the oil the longer you go before it starts lubricating your engine)

It doesn't get THAT cold in Michigan. Besides, I just have this thing about 0 weight; I just have this feeling that it's too thin to protect anything. But that's all psychological.

Don't know if anyone noticed, Mobil1 now comes in 0W-20 that they reccomend for Honda 5W-20 service. I've used that on my last two oil changes and its running fine. (previously using M1 5W-30 since the first oil change)

I change it every 5k miles and it still comes out pretty damn clean.

Dave, how many miles have you run on that 0w-30 now? Is it supposed to be a replacement for the Honda 5w-30?

the 0w20 mobil 1 is designed to work/replace honda 5w20. the only reason honda went to 5w20 is to help meet cafe standards. i dont like oil that thin. my car recomends 5w30 i stick with in the winter and 10w30 in the summer (warmer moe severe driving)

I put the 0W-20 in for the first time at 55k, changed it at 60k, now I'm at about 62k.

I have always been told that if you are going to substitute Honda's recommendation of 5W30 oil (or 5W20 on the newer models) - then it's much better to go with 10W30 than to go the other way to 0W20/30/whatever it is...
