Dealer Rates - Brake Replacement

2002, TL-S, 5AT.

Just talked to the dealer. Here is what they said for costs on Brake Replacement:

New Pads + Turn/Cut Rotors = ~$290 per "axle" or ~$580 total (fronts plus rears).

or

New Pads + New Rotors = ~$420 per "axle" or ~$840 total (fronts plus rears).

OK, I *know* that's WAY too much compared to aftermarket and/or DIY.

This is a DIY project for me. *That* is NOT my question.

My question is: Is this in line with what *your* local dealer(s) charge for similar service?

(Edit: BTW, local dealer labor rate is $96 per hour).

TIA.

Yeah my dealer wanted 400 for new pads and turn front rotors, thats 400 for just the fronts.

For 500 i did new racingbrake rotors, new hawk ceramic pads and the legend caliper swap. Money well spent.

My dealer labor rate is $108, and the brake job seems on par with what other Acura dealers charge.

Great!!

Thanks guys.

Just building the case for After Market Parts and DIY:

"Not only will I get *better* brakes - with all NEW parts - but we'll also save $xxx. How can that be a bad thing?"

.....

"No, no, I won't 'break' the car. I've been studying up on the *best* parts and how to do this. It's easy. Besides J (mmade22) is going to help. He used to fix cars for a living. It'll be fine. AND we can go on that Mountain Run this week-end."

....

"When have I let you down? I can do this."

....

"Well except for all those things, when have I ever let you down?"

....

The dealer rates are outta control

I guess they charge and arm and leg is because they make practically no money on the sale of vehicles, so they charge ridiculous labor rates for service and parts. It helps to have a site like Azine

The stories I could tell you of working as a dealer tech and service writer----
Not enough beer for those tales of woe and deceipt!
Lets just say you should do all the work you can yourself-
and be richer, wiser, and safer for it

Bear- make sure you bed those new brakes a few times and have solid braking before the mountain run. It takes up to 500 miles to get the RB fronts working 110 percent and stopping 30 feet sooner than you expect.
With the very rough cross hatch finish on the rotors- but with the slightly harder pads---
they will bed fairly quickly, but you dont want to pull a Blackura....(now BlackuraNY in his new ride)- doh- gave away the story!!

and go tail first into your favorite corner, jump the curb- launch into the air backwards-headed for the railing,,,

at which point- the girlfriend is prettttttty sure you're not just messing around and this is some serious shiiiiiitesss you have gotten into~

The sales dept exist MAINLY to provide cars for the service dept- scheduled maitenance and normal wear items like brakes are awesome moneymakers!!!!
which pays the overhead on the whole place- that free loaner car- wireless internet - cold waters- sat tv- nice waiting area- thats not really FREE you know....

or as I like to call it: How many dollars does it take to make Free???

They'll be bedded and PLENTY of time to run up 500 miles of mixed driving before heading up the backroads next Monday.

BTW - Not bringing the GF this time. Wife will be along and it just wouldn't work out very well.
