Dead, She's Dead!!!

I hate to say it but my TL is offically dead. 95371 on the odom and i aint gonna shell out anymore money to fix her. (2000 TL-P w/navi.) I could probably part her out and get more money than what i would if i were to bring it for a trade in Just wanted to share my agrivation, i just needed to vent.

95,000 miles should be just broken in for the engine.. end of life for these suckass transmissions perhaps but you should still be under warranty on that. I'd like to know what exactly killed your TL at such a young age.

The tranny is dead. Drives only in 1st and there is no reverse. Barely made it home today. Car was reconstructed so warranty does not exist. I didn't know about the tranny problem until i found acurazine. If i did, i would have passed on this car and saved enough for an 04 instead.

Unless you have a salvage title, your transmission should be covered by the 7 year/100,000 mile warranty.

Edit: I see that you do have a salvage title.

You still might be better off fixing it and then reselling the car.

Nope, i'm gonna salvage what i can from the car. I can't afford to fix her, i'm gonna either part her out or sell a rolling chasis. :surrender

Try to locate a used tranny online, or at a junkyard. I understand it will be expensive to fix, but it might be worth it since you won't get much for the car as it sits now.

Sorry to hear that this has happened to you.

What kind of accident was it in? It seems like such an early and sad end for that car.

It was flooded. All computer and electronics were replaced. Interior was brand new, ran like a champ when i first had it (6mths ago). The dents weren't there when i bought the car. Sum as*ho*e vandalized my car and threw a brick at the rear pillar as seen in my pic.

$3,000 sounds about right. The rebuilt transmission in my 1999 TL ran about $3,200 through an Acura dealer.

Another option is to install a used transmission as was mentioned above.

Just compare the value increase versus the repair cost.

Parting the car out is certainly an option but there's an associated "hassle factor" to consider. But that might be a better option with a salvage title.

Good Luck!

Bob

True, i have been comparing value versus repair cost and i think because the car is reconstructed, it will be hard to sell even if i replaced the transmission. I origianlly got the car for $8000 with 75,000 miles so dropping another $3000 and then trying to sell it wont be easy.... Any other opinions? what would be a fair asking price to begin with?

I would sell it for $5,000 firm. But honestly I would really try to locate a junkyard and find a newer tranny. You have the 5spd correct? Those should be easier to find than the 4spd auto's. I would not advise on a rebuild unless you get it from Acura. Acura/Honda knows these cars best over the tranny shops.

The car still seems to be nice and in good shape, your loss will be someone else's gain for a price of $5,000. Then again I understand where you are coming from with putting money on top of money into the same car. Sometimes you just have to say eneough is eneough.

You did get a good deal on it, but then again it was a flood/salvage car. I tend to stay away from those situtions unless it's purely a beater car that I'd throw away as soon as a repair over $500 was needed. If it's in your financial budget, sell the car and put a downpayment on something newer with a warranty. Good luck and keep us posted. My vote is to have the car fixed.

Many Acura dealers don't actually do the transmission rebuilds. They contract with local transmission shops for the work. That's how my transmission was rebuilt.

Yea if you have them actually rebuild it. If you go to them with a failure and are under warranty they have them already rebuilt by the place that acura has doing them

From what I have heard acura dealerships will sometimes replace trannys over the warranty extension maybe they will cut you a break and not notice the salvaged title.

alright pretty much for the past year I have bought salvage TL's. right now your car the way it is will not sell for more than $2k. if u get the tranny fixed than u are looking at tops 5-6k. because of the high milage. I had to sell a 2000 tl-p which was newly painted had an oem kit, headers, intake and the car had a clean title and it sold for $5500. there was nothing wrong with the car. also sold a 99 with a clean title with navi for $6k. so that car in a dealer auction would not even pass 1k if it saidsalvage and not running condition. best thing for u to do is to finda used tranny for about $500-800 and see if u can get someone to help u install it yourself. selling the car will do nothing but make u lose a lot of money.

Repair it. You'll lose bigger than what you'll put it. At least then It'll run.

You are crazy. I bought a used tranny with a post 02/06 revision, put it in my car and guess what?... the tranny was f***ed.
You do this and your out another few hundred. Best thing to do is burn the car. Just kidding. Best thing is to sell it as is. Either way you will come out the same unless you get a good deal on a rebuild. It really depends on how much the rebuild is, cause it can go anywhere from $1400-$3500. Check your local shops. I would be willing to take it off your hands. PM me your asking price if you decide to sell.

If you really enjoy the car, repair it.

Seriously, I just got mine back from the tranny shop. Rebuilt the unit for $1650, which made sense to me as a unit from car-part.com averaged $900.

My ride is a salvage vehicle as well, and I have spent about $3k+ so far.

Just my

Another thing to consider is the cost involved in buying another car.

You might be better off repairing it and keeping it yourself.

Be sure to lay out all the costs associated with buying something else.

Good Luck!

Ouch that's was afriad of hearing. I know i wasn't going to break even with the condition the car is in now but i didn't know i would only get a couple grand for it. I think it would go for more here (massachusetts) then from your neck of the woods. I am reconsidering finding a tranny to drop in so i can cut my losses. I've gotten more quotes for a rebuild ($2000-3000) and $1000-$1500 used without labor. I'm tryin' to keep my search local so if tranny is messed up i wont have to deal with shipping/agrivation costs across state lines. I'll keep u guys up to date. I'll definately have my decision made come weekend's end.

Check car-part.com for local salvage yards with used TL transmissions.

If you go with a used transmission, see if you can get some sort of warranty.

I've called Acura's customer link and they have my vehicle in the system. They have it as having a salvage title and voided warranty. I'll try another place but i'm pretty sure that they will find that information out the same way it was done the first time. Who knows, my local acura just might cut me a break.

Final decision.

well i made my decision today guys, i finally found a reputable transmission shop and are going to rebuild my transmission for $1800. There also gonna throw in a year warranty, which is more than enough because i will be selling her in about 6 months. At least i can save up more money, get more money for her and get a new car... Sorry all the guys that sent me messages for the parts on my car but this works out well for me.

Best of luck with the rebuild!

See if the shop can get the latest transmission parts from Acura. According to reports on this forum, Acura updated some transmission parts in February of 2005. These new parts may result in improved reliability. Search the forum for more details.

I dropped the car off this moring, 7:30 to be exact, and i'll have her back this monday. I'll definately make sure that the mechanic will use the most recent revision of acura's parts. hey if not i'll have one year to find that out. I'll drop more info once it comes available to me

Good luck with the new tranny! I like the year warranty. Might also be a good idea to take it to a mechanic after that and have them give it the ol' once over. That might give you a sense of what repairs or maintenance issues you're looking at down the road. Other than the brick damage, it looks like you have a sweet ride.
