Damn, my trans is probably on its way out I bet?

99TL w/navi, 169k mi. As many of you know I got my car in 06 with about 130k mi. I've done all the major maintenance, and my car has ran fine with no real problems until very recently. Last week my ac stopped blowing, So I had a buddy check it out for me and we noticed my connectors were melted and the blower motor was overheating. He got me what I needed overnight and problem solved.

Now for the BIG issue, while out last night I noticed my trans started to slip. When I drive its fine for the first two gears then while it gets to third(at around 40-60mph) there's a bit of hesitation and revs get high briefly then it finally goes to fourth and driving becomes normal until I have to stop again then accelerate back up to driving speed. I'm no mechanic but I guess thats what you guys would call slipping right? I just never been in a car and had that happen before.

The first owner had the trans rebuilt @ 108k in 05 with a 12/mo or 12k mi warranty.

I'm a broke college student lol , what should I do? Should I go to AAMCO? Whats the difference between replacement transmissions from acura and transmissions rebuilt from various places such as aamco? Will i get updated components? will it fail again, and if so is it even worth it?

you can try replacing the selenoids- a few others have gotten shift improvement-at least for a while to hold it together

acura uses new and used parts to build a replacement trans that arrives as a complete unit to the dealer
A shop uses your same case and old parts that are still good and new parts where needed
The updates are in the parts so everyone gets them
you are looking at 2500 to rebuild yours

Its worth a stop by aamco for a free inspection- see what they say on the seleniods
see recent trans thread by StonedCl - has diagram of those parts for the 5 speed

If its gaining rpm- ease off the gas until trans engages..help it all you can

Yup, thats exactly what I've been doing. I've actually been going the speed limits for a change. When I feel it rev up and scream in 3rd I take my foot off the gas a little. How much longer do you think my trans will last driving it like this

it could last days hours minutes...if the clutch packs are toast..
avoid in town driving where possible- that uses the weak parts the most

its an acura warranty rebuilt with 60k miles on it? thats about right~

You can go talk with the service manager about some goodwill since this trans only lasted 60--
the starving student story may help- see thread by phee when he first joind here and got 90% coverage on a 99! with that same TRUTH

I believe any good `story` contains a maximum of 10% Fact,,, substantiated by 90% fiction...so go with the full truth on this one

That's good and all, but the only problem is that it was rebuilt by cottman transmissions, I have the original owners receipt and paperwork : (, not acura

Well I went to aamco, then to an local independent shop. Both shops get a fair amount of customers. Both shops only give a 1yr warrenty, and both shops said it would take about 3 days. The guy at the local independent shop did seem knowledgeable and said at worst I am looking at is close to $2k, but all I may need is selenoids which is much cheaper since they do tend to go bad on these cars. Both shops seem to be very familiar with 3.2tl's and cl's, the guy at the local shop was actually offering to buy my car minus the cost to fix the trans. well anyways, which shop would i be better off going to?

probably the local guy who knows them is the best bet= he cares about his reputation

was the buy offer 2000 lower or 4000--may be time to off the car with cottman rebuilt- its an original design case too-not as good of oil flow

well is there anyway I can get a updated case along with my updated components? I thought the updates were in the components, not the case?

good luck with that!
The acura rebuilding shop gets those and uses them in the new rebuilds
It has better oil passages and oil flow than the original case
See what the parts counter says,,, after they finish laughing
Some parts are updated in materials and some VIns need a new ECU

the stuff you read about post 2/05 trans on here -thats when the new case was introduced- sometime in 05 they were being distributed
The first few months production likely had problems as they sorted out the changes.
thats why it has a warranty!
Failure rate on the rebuilds dropped after that change so the case change has helped

Well here's an update, trans if being rebuilt, they have it disassembled they are waiting on the parts from the distributor and it should be done on mon. I choose the local independent shop. Its going to be $2,241 w/ a 1yr nationwide warranty. He did offer me a 2yr, or 3yr warranty. The 2yr brought the price up to about $2,400. I just went with the 1yr warranty, since the last rebuild lasted 4yrs I figure it should outlast the max(3yr) warranty they are offering me.

I asked if they are using oem parts, he stated they get their parts from the same distributor honda gets theirs from, its some place in georgia. they get it from the distributor instead of honda because honda would get it from the distributor then hike up the price then send the parts he said. I know they probably wont use atf-z1 but probably their own fluid to fill, so I will do a full 3x3(3 full 3 qt drains and then a 4th fill, for 12 qts total) with Honda ATF-Z1. So my new rebuild should last for a while, any chances of it lasting longer then it did before?

oh and the tech did say that i did not need this, "28200-P0Z-003-SOLENOID ASSY.,SHIFT", because they tested it and it was still good. is it mandatory for these to be replaced during a trans rebuild?

Find out what kinda torque converter they are gonna use?
I got a Transstar ReCon TQ, I read up ALOT when my trany went bad and called 10 places including Level 10 and ATRA is a great website.. I also got a Raybesto 3rd gear clutch pack Sonnax end plugs haynes ATF cooler and Amsoil syntetic ATF.
Car trans is holding up well but only has 500 miles and 2 weeks old. I went there yesterday they wanted me to stop by to check fluid level/color/smell and make sure no leaks and shifts where smooth.. So far soo good!
