D.I.Y Steering Rack Replacement?
I posted not long ago about a problem I had with my TL wandering to the right. I finally brought it to the dealer to get a professional alignment hoping that would solve the problem. It didn't. Service Dept. told me that they think the wandering is being caused by an internal leak in the power steering rack. They want about $1100.00 to replace the ps rack. I've replaced ps racks before but never on a TL. Has anyone ever replaced a ps rack on a TL? How difficult is it on a TL? Did you use a rebuilt rack ($180.00) or an oem acura one ($600.00)? The dealer also found a bent rear suspension knuckle that will need to be replaced to bring the rear alignment to spec. I had originally taken the car to a local mechanic for an alignment but they couldn't seem to get it right after 3 hours with the car. The local mechanic had diagnosed the wandering as a failed motor mount. Dealer said that a failed motor mount shouldn't cause the wandering but neither could the dealer guarantee that it was definitely the steering rack. I'm considering elevating the front of the TL on jack stands, starting the engine to build up power steering fluid pressure and then seeing if the ps rack does in fact steer to the right without input from the steering wheel. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.
