It actually is cut open on the top side and it delivers air. But if you want to widen it by cutting off the tab, thus increasing the windspeed by 1.384 mph to the filter, then by all means.

You can remove the foglight altogether. But make sure you have a bypass valve or something. Hydrolock will suck

Good idea. Try it and let us know if it works. I hope it does but probably will wear your filter out faster. Unless you have an icebox.

ya it will give more air to the filter but I dont think it would be worth it because of how fast the filter would get dirty and if you drove through a rain storm or the car wash, there would be nothing to protect the filter....dont do it there is plenty of places for air to get to the filter the way it is

....great, I've had my driverside foglight out for a few months. Probably adds to my poor gas mileage as of late.

that wouldnt cause worse mileage, unless you are constantly flooring it to see if it makes a HP difference

As far as daily driving, it should be okay.. cause i had mine open for a long time, i've drived in the rain, washed my car.... everything seems fine, unless you drive you TL like a submarine. Performance wise, I think the car is smoother in acceleration. at least my butt dyno tells me so..

No, you're right. I'm having a different mileage issue. I'm at like 150 miles on this tank and pretty close to having the light come up. I'm usually at about 230 miles at this point. Will see what happens next tank. Maybe it's adjusting to the cold.

Yeah...getting a little concerned. I'm able to deal with the fact that I normally get between 18-20 mpg. I only can get above 300 when doing straight hwy.

Sorry to the orignal poster.

I usually get 18-20 in city. Been like that since I bought the car in Nov '02. I don't open it up that often.

You guys are too pampered. My gas gauge needle is about a quarter of its way down from the max line (and I filled it up all the way, beyond that line) and I've only logged 38 miles so far. At this rate, I'll get like 11 mpg.

Why? Because I start my cold ass engine, then drive a mile to class, park it, then do it again on the way home. x 3-4 more times everyday.

My car hates me.

I normally run about 22 mpg city but with all the long drives I've been taking recently I am getting 29 mpg consistently.
As for the cutting the whole to let more air in, I wouldn't do it. As someone already said, they are open on the sides and the top. I would be to afraid that it would get dirty to quick, especially in the winter time up here with all the sand and salt on the road...no thanks. Not sure where you're at though.

My 03 Type-S with 32K on the odo did Houston to Baton Rouge to New Orleans this summer at 80-90 MPH with the AC on and moderately accelerated passing and arrived with gas to spare. Add up the distance and it comes up to 400+ miles to the tank. Blame it on the crappy but friction-efficient OEM Michelin's and extended use of 5th gear. And possibly drafting (safely I must add) much of the left-lane traffic until they yielded to my right of way!

You also need to remember that they have switched to winter formulas for gas, which will lead to lower mileage. Also try different fuels. Try to find fuel with out ethanol in it. My motor hates the 10% mixture and gets horrible mileage with it

The Exxon I've been using since I've had this car has the 10% label on the pump. I would've thought they switched the mixture a while ago.....maybe they did it recently.
The concern is going from my normal ~230 per tank to what looks like is going to be ~160 this tank......kind of a drastic swing and I haven't had this problem the past few winters.....If anything, just a few miles here and there. Probably should check my tires as well.
....and horrible mileage for you is what ?....like 375 ?...LOL

Opening up the hole will cause you to lose downforce on the front of the car. This will cause the car to go from neutral or loose to tight. Oops, sorry, I thought I was on a NASCAR forum.
