Hello, I was recently told that I needed a new catalytic converter for my 99' 3.2 TL by a mechanic.(I was having acceleration/rattling problems.)

How much should I be expecting to pay for a replacement?

I received a quote for about $500(mechanic told me the cat is acura original part) including 2 gaskets(I have no idea what this is) with labor. Also, the mechanic told me the sensor needed to be replaced, that would be for about $200. was told if I don't replace the sensor it wouldn't pass for emission inspection.


damn, $700 for all that? Am I getting ripped off?

All you would have to do is order the gaskets separately, which your mechanic can do.

 

is htis orig or aftermaket? I just had mine replaced with aftermarket, and it fialed 2 months later, i had warranty but still. The labor costs $$

 

That about right price. Why it cost so much is B/c 99 Cat is different from 00-03. I don't why Acura only made Cat for 1 year only then change the design. Ready only different is the O2 sensor is middle on 99 an 00-03 O2 sensor in back part of Cat. You can buy 00-03 an then buy O2 extensions kit. You can get 1 from our Vendor for about $275 shipped complete with everything needed for installment. (not included the O2 sensor)

Reson why I know this B/c I was going through this last week.(BIG HEADACHE) Even If your Dealer(Autoshop) the cheapest you can gey 99 CAT is for $425 an that still too high


Now if you just wanted pass your Emission you can gutted out the CAT then clear the code an drive about 100miles an then get it TESTS an You will pass.
Here what I did.......

 

gutting out ur cat.... that's a definite fail here in cali for smog inspection...

 

The precious metal structure inside the cat is to convert the harmful NO2 in the exhaust gas to NO and O2. With the cat gutted out, there is no way that smog test wll pass with all those unconverted NO2.
