Corroded Battery Question, Need help!
Hey whats up,
The other day I opened the hood on my 1999 TL and I found that around the Positive terminal of the battery, there was some bluish corrosion forming. I do have a subs and an amp connected to it. I kind of figured that has something to do with it but I am not sure as to what is causing it. Can someone tell me why there is corrosion forming?? it would be much appreciated, thanks..

corrosion happens!@!@ when current flows between two differ metals (lead and copper) and oxegen is available you'll get corrosion over time. use a solution of baking soda and water to nuetralize it and then aply some grease to block out the supple of oxegen to the area.

I agree but don't apply grease, there's a lot of corrosion prevention compounds designed for electrical connections and under extreme heat, get that stuff and like Yield2s said clean everything in fact take all the connections appart that way you can clean in between the connections.

I just replace to battery if they show any sign of corrosion around the terminals. IMHO it is caused by the seal at the post(s) leaking, fumes from the acid cause the corriosion. The only real remedy is a new battery. You've seen the idiots who have the eaten out battery boxes, etc..

Yea, I'm fairly stupid, that I agree with. The blueish stuff is copper sulfate and the black lead sulfate. The problem is electrolysis. The term requires that an electrolyte be present. In regards to oxygen being sufficient to cause this I question that theory as lead and copper are stable, you might see that occur with magnesium and steel and this is likely a result of moisture in the air. Otherwise, an electrolyte is needed, and is provided by the leakage of your battery.
If you seal up the terminals with the various products that are available that will protect your terminal but not the rest of your car. I can only ask that you address your attention to areas about the battery, and look up on the hood above the battery.
Also look at the battery plates, if you can, or the vent caps if they are covered in a black soot like stuff the battery is shot. Again it will seen to work ok, but it has reduced capacity and will help wear out your alternator prematurely. In my opinion you should replace the battery every three years and if it starts getting corrosion watch it. I have seen the black death occur rather soon after installation of a cheap unit. I could be a battery distributor, or just stupid, who knows, it’s the internet.

There's some truth to both sides here. If you batt. leaks acid replace it, If it simply is corroded due to lack of "no ox" grease than clean and grease it.
As a little back ground, maintaining huge batt. stings is part of my central office reutine(both wet and dry batt. strings)
