Post Comptech Header

I just ordered the headers and can't believe that I did, because the cost of them are freakin ridiculous. It was this morning around 4a.m. when I put in my order. AFter I woke up I realized what I did and started to trip out. Well, I don't want to give them 200 bucks for free so, I am just going to keep them.

Do you guys think that the headers are really worth $1000? Also, did anyone install the headers themselves? If not then, who did you get to do the install and how much?

Thanks guys...

Yes, the headers is worth the money. Unless you have installed headers before, I would let a competent mechanic to do it for you.

Can any capable mechanic do it or do they have to have had experience doing performance headers?? I have a few mechanics in my family that would install them for me if I should decide to get them

Do you guys think it would be better with CT headers and the CAI? Or can you go with the drop in filter and that would be fine?? I know there is a great cost and noise difference, but what about power?

I have a suggestion to all the people on this board with headers. Has anyone thought of getting just the piping from the cat to the mufflers? Also, has anyone got a high flow cat with their headers, and did you notice any difference?

I think getting the piping from the cat to the mufflers replaced, the increase in flow will increase power significantly.

Doing as many mods as you want can only go so far if you have a bottleneck in the system. For example, the 133MZ bus speed in our PCs is the bottle neck in our system. Even if you have a 1.5GHz processor, the system will still get slowed down. Point being, same thing applies to our cars. As long as the cat is there, that's the bottleneck. I've let 2 other friends of mine who have TLs drive mine, intake, hi-flo cat and exhaust. Both have said it's noticeably faster and more responsive. I do plan on getting headers, since that seems to be a bottleneck as well, but at least I got the cat out of the way..

StylinTLS has a point, you have to look at the entire system to see where the bottleneck would be. Upgrading one part may reveal a bottleneck elsewhere. As far as the exhaust sytem is concerned, I think the CAT is the most restrictive, but can't do much about that since it is required by law.

DragonTL - you mentioned just changing the y-pipe, but believe it or not that is not main problem. I've spoken to a custom exhaust manufacturer, and he indicated that the stock exhaust manifold (3-to-1) is poorly designed. The transition is so short that it's likely that the exhaust pulses reaches the other exhaust port. Meaning as one cylinder exhaust port closes it may push the gases towards the next cylinder just as the its exhaust port opens, and struggles to push the exhaust out. Ideally you would like to have the header pipe as long as possible so as to reduce the likelihood of this happening. If you put the stock exhaust manifold next to a Comptech 3-to-1 pipe you'll see what I mean. Also the angle of the pipes as they combine could play a factor in power output.

I know exactly what you mean, because I did flow analysis on UT's SAE formula one go kart and found out that exhaust pulse tuning is essential to getting the maximum power output from your engine.

I also know that the bottleneck is the restricter, however if you have several bottlenecks, the restriction is increased. The concept of flow does not correspond with manufacturing bottlenecks due to fluid mechanics.

StylinTLS - what type of cat did you install? Was it the Random Tech?

Yes, it was a Random Tech one. It wasn't designed for the TL, but it would fit. Only mod that was required was lengthening the O2 sensor wire and the O2 sensor not screwing in so nicely into it's socket. Asides from that, the hi-flo cat was worth waiting and working for.

That's funny . . . I had the same problem when I put my Random Tech CAT also.

Anyone have a dyno with a Random Tech CAT?
What type of gains do you get? I am thinking about getting headers and I may get the CAT at the same time.

Damn you Dragon, you gettin headers already?
I won't be getting them until later on, but am very curious as to what the actual gains are. How about once you get the headers on, we go down to River City for some friendly runs. You down?

Speakin of headers, anyone know if there's gonna be another group buy? I'm contracted for building a network right now, and when I'm done...I've got $$$ So, most likely get headers within a month or so.
