Out of those two and if money isn't an issue, Comptech all the way.

Not to be a spoilsport, but am I correct in thinking that exhaust is more for show/sound then hp gains? I thought the most in terms of hp you could get was around 5-7hp... plus some power loss at the low end(?)

Or am I confused?

Thanks,

Joe

Totally depends on car/setup. I just sold my WRX to pick up the TL and my aftermarket exhaust with the mods i had on yeilded me at least 30+ WHP. On the TL since it's NA, i would have to say 5-10HP stock, but if you have a cold air intake you could yield a bit more.

You may be correct about the WRX, I hear that simple bolt-ons yield ridiculous amounts of HP. But this is not the case with the TL. See Comptech's dyno results, comparing stock HP with Comptech exhaust HP:

http://www.comptechusa.com/images/dyno/1999TLplot.pdf

From the dyno, you can see that the highest HP gain is 17.90 HP at 6,750 RPM. And this is gain with BOTH headers and exhaust. At this RPM, 3 HP is lost when comparing stock vs Comptech exhaust. So you can see from Comptech's own dyno results, no more than 2 HP is generated at 5,000 RPM (and it goes downhill after 5,000 RPM). If you add a cold air intake, you may add a few more HP, but not much more. If it was true you could get 10 HP just by adding exhaust, it would be a recommended mod in my books. But the dollar per HP value is down right retarded, and the only justification for getting exhausts is if you want looks and sound, or if you are into forced induction (turbo, supercharger). Otherwise exhaust is a mod that should be done last. My

If you want sound, I personally would go with the Magnaflows. They sound pretty good on a TL. Can't say whether Apexi or Comptech is better, as I haven't heard either of them.

even you want the apexi it's hard to find elsewhere, coz they don't make the WS anymore, only WS2, but still not too many places offer with dual outlets

i have seen some single pipe selling for only 250

by looking Comptech has teh best coz their tip is not too big and the finish is nice

the Apexi has a 4" tip and might draw some attention to the cops, which is not what i want

sound wise it got the deep tone, but not loud. gd enough to bust off the car alarm that park next to you coz of the low bass

the apexi cat is running about 600 for dual mufflers, 500 for single muffler

btw single muffler gets a louder tone while the dual mufflers gives a deeper tone

any one would do it but single mufflers look weird on the TL

safe to say you are looking for about 700 for a cat back system, unless you find a real deal from ebay or sth
