Comptech Air Filter Installed

Well, I installed the Comptech Air Filter over the weekend. It came with a small aerosol foaming oil can, which looked like it was good for one thorough application. The installation went much easier than I expected. Messages from others indicated the lid was hard to close after installing the comptech filter. I hinged it, and screwed down the two bolts -- very easy. Hope it wasn't TOO easy

I don't really feel much difference, which is understandable, since the filter is more of a long-term benefit to the engine rather than providing any instant gratification results. I've been having some difficulty finding more foaming oil, but I finally found a store (ORW in San Diego) that carries the foaming oil for about $5 for a 5.5oz spray can.

So anyway, this is my temporary hold-over until I finally decide to plunk down a few bones for a CAI. Not sure if I should wait for the AEM V2, though.

Hey planetside. I too installed a Comptech air filter. I have a 2003 TL-P. Is yours a TL-P or a TL-S? When I replaced the stock air filter with the Comptech, closing the lid wasn't hard either. I think the hardest part was removing and rescrewing on the 4 screws that holds the lid down because you don't have much room to hold the screw with one hand and unscrewing the screw with the other. I actually dropped one of the screws somewhere into the engine because I wasn't able to hold the screw tightly with my fingers when the screw came off. Do you guys think that screw is still somewhere in the engine or it fell out already? I just went to the dealer and got a replacement screw. Don't really notice any gains in performance and Comptech recommends servicing the air filter every oil change compared to K&N's 50,000 miles interval. I just ordered the Comptech Air Filter Cleaning Kit at their website for $17 shipped.

I have a 2003 TL-S ... sorry I forgot to mention that. Funny ... mine only had 2 bolts on the right side as you're standing in front of the car. In fact, the bolts were permanently fixed to the lid such that they could be unscrewed, but not removed from the upper part. There was a single "hinge" on the lefthand side, and a cable running along the top (I undid the plastic fastener so I could move the cable out of the way). Hopefully you won't have too much trouble with the missing screw. Maybe the next time you're at the dealer, they can find it for you (or if you ever get the car up on a hydraulic lift, you can hunt for it). As far as the foaming oil, I found a place locally that carries it, so I avoid the excessive shipping cost (autocarparts.com is charging a bit too much on shipping per item IMHO). Anyway, a local off-road store carries the Oil (5.5oz spray can) for $5 and the Oil and Cleaner combo (same 5.5oz spray can with additional cleaner canister) for $11.

Daimler, try this link:

AEM CAI v2

Numba, I take it to mean that Comptech does not have an Icebox currently for the TL-S?

Good work Danny. However, you'll be much happier when you spend the $$ for the AEM.

Thanks, James. But the decision I'm making now is whether I wait for the Icebox, or take the plunge now and get the CAI. I think the Icebox appeals to me on a practical level because the air filter element is much easier to access than in the CAI solution. It costs more, and is probably less bang for your buck, but I'm a big fan of convenience.
