Cold starting problem comes and goes

2003 TL When it starts and runs it is great. Like a raped Ape. No misses, and runs like new. The only mod is the transmission swap (130xxx mile) 4years ago and many miles on it.. 160xxx now.
The car will crank and not start or it will start but the engine is stumbling, RPMs 400 to 500. If I put it in gear it dyes. If it starts and gets warmed up it will run fine. Warm up is hit or miss meaning warm up can happen quick or take 4- 5 minutes. Quick is less then a minute.
This happened last winter but it was mild last year. No problems all Summer and Fall.

No check engine light, no valve noise when running.
Only code P0118 if reset on start it right back.

According to the information on the link below for a P0118 code if you remedy the ect sensor the car should run better.

That makes sense! I'll looked up the code more than once and that was that first time I've seen:

What are the symptoms of the P0118 code?

  • The ECM turns the Check Engine Light on and goes into failsafe mode, substituting input to 176 deg F.
  • The engine may have a hard start when engine is cold, and start normal when warm.
  • The engine may run rough and hesitate until the engine warms up.
  • The engine should run close to normal once the engine warms up.
Note: The symptoms are determined by the manufacturer failsafe ECM strategy for the vehicle during a failure and may vary between manufacturers and vehicles.

I will pick up a new sensor, and inspect wiring.
Thank You for responding zeta .
