Angry Coin Tray / Ashtry not closing

I don't have the ashtray but the coin tray dosn't close all the way in my car. I can push up hard, and it will close, but as soon as i let go it comes back down. There's like a 1 inch gap.. Has anyone had this problem?

oh, i just bought the car a couple of weeks ago...

thanks..

Mine's not doing this but I have read that there may be something caught behind the tray itself (such as a coin) that is preventing it from closing. You'll probably have to take out the tray to get the foreign object out.

The so called "Coin Tray" is complete garbage. the tray is so poorly designed that you basically have to leave it almost empty or the coins fall behind it. To get them out, remove the plastic piece in the console just under the coin tray located behind the heated seat switches. Grab the top edge of it and just pull and it will pop off. Then you can get you finger in there and flick the coins out.

Once you remove the plastic piece, wrap duct tape --sticky side out-- around the end of a pencil. Use it to lift the coins out.

The coin tray is poorly designed.. as mentioned before. I have had is get stuck open twice from coins getting in behind the tray. It is pretty hard to get back there.,... one can remove the plastic piece above/around the tray, but that's it. Removing it didn't provide much help for me.

I just pointed it out to the dealer when I went in for oil changes and they replaced it twice... at least, that's what it said on my invoice. Don't know why they would, but it was all free anyway

My spring came out and they fixed mine. Never had problems with coins getting behind.

I use the cupholders for a coin tray. One for pennies and one for everything else. Sometimes they get sticky if soda spills on them.

The coins are in there. Sometimes if you open and close the coin door, banging it just a litle as it closes, you can get the coins to shift around to just enough to be able to reach in a slide 'em out. That is the other part btw....You usually cant just pluck the coins out, you have to slide them off to the side before you can get em out.

what side do you slide them off to?

I took used a flash light to look inside, and i can see a dime stuck behind the left side of the door. So the door dosn't close all the way.

I tried with a pen it didn't budge at all. Then i tried with a small flat head screw driver, still no go. There is a screw to the left of the computer port. THe dime is to the left of that screw. I'm gonna try it sum more tonight when i get home...How can i get it out??

i usually slide my coins out to the left. If you cant get it to budge with a long screwdriver then you will have to remove the center console. its not really difficult. Takes all of about 5 minutes (give yourself 10 minutes if this is the first time you are removing it. )
