Unhappy Code P0122

Hello everyone...

My wife was driving home when the Engine & TCS lights came on.
The car started shifting funny but she made it home...

The code I recovered was P0122 Throttle Position Circuit Low Input.

I erased the code but the car "jumps" a bit when going from R to D
but not N to D or from P to R.

Could this jump be linked to the TPS?

Aside from just replacing the sensor, can it be tested?

Any help, as always, is appreciated.

?

Anyone?

I have done some research on this site about the TPS being part of the throttle body but does anyone think it could attribute to the little jump
felt going into D?

Car-part.com searches online junkyards. You can find the TBs on there for pretty cheap. I need to get one b/c my IACV is FUBAR and my TPS got ripped off by the chain when we were pulling my motor for the swap.

I was deciding if I should get new or not...also, the way the car jumps when going into D, it feels like a trans issue and with the TL's history of trans issues...I'm not hopeful that all it is will be this TPS....any words of encouragment?

So would you

A: Buy a new one at $400
B: Buy a salvage one at $100 but have a giant ? on life expectancy or if it even works
C: Test drive one from an Acura dealer and do the old switch-a-roo

I went with a used one. The salvage yard extends a 30 day warranty, enough to
know if it is dead right now. It looks like 4 bolts and a gasket....does that sound right?
I ordered both gaskets from Autozone, not knowing which is the one I will need.
I just need to clean the salvage throttle body out....carb cleaner or MAF cleaner?

yep pretty easy to change. Get a carb cleaner and a old tooth brush and clean things up. Take the IACv off and clean that out while you at it.

Well, 2 bolts, 2 nuts, 4 disconnected hoses and one disconnected main intake later...I have the salvage yard unit on. Everything reconnected, battery cable in place and I start the engine. Starts fine but then the engine revs to 3k RPM and stays there so I goose the throttle and that starts a hunting idle from 1k to 3k RPM.

ideas?

Nope, no codes but the engine is cold and I am running it long enough to get warm.
Partly because I don't like working on a hot engine and because I don't want to make things worse.

Sounds like the IACV getting stuck. Did you take it off and clean it before you installed the TB?

Iac is on the bottom. You must have a 99? Cause every TL ive seen had philips screws. Take it off and clean it with carb cleaner. Care full not to ruin the rubber gasket (can reuse it)

Yea the 99 does have a star pattern IIRC. I found this out by sitting there forever with a stubby Phillips head and just could get it. Finally I took the whole TB off and saw that they were different.

I was wrong, the $#@! screws are not torque or hex or anything else...the PTB used a 5 pointed star shaped screw....just great.

I went to Lowes, Home Depot, Pep Boys and Autozone...no one has a 5 pt star tool

Time to drill them out, any last words?

What a PITA.....

170155 can you get a philips or a torx or a flat head to fit in there just to make it work? Once removed take the screws to a hardware store and get ones that are philips or something easier to install and remove.

The bottom sensor has a total of 4 screws. 2 philips and 2 bitch kind.
The philips ones remove the while thing while the bitch ones, now that I have them
drilled off, reveal a magnet of sorts on a spindle.

Where do I clean it?

All done.....

I love you guy!

It is fixed, no more code, no more jumping and my trans with 190k is still going strong....
(finding some wood to knock on...)

This site rocks .... better than the dealership, couldn't get any advice or help from them.

Throttle Position Sensor is what they were working on.

A P0112 code could also be low voltage within the IAT sensor's circuit. Check wiring and connectors, clear code and recheck if it comes back.
