Clunking Front End Noise Solution

After dealer fixed the problem, he said, "As far as the clunking from the right front end when going over bumps, there was a lack of lubrication in the steering shaft spline down near the rack."

Do you know where the steering shaft near the rack is? Is that the steering rod that links with the rack and pinion?

You are correct regarding location, but what he said doesn't really make sense...to me.

the steering shaft extends from the steering wheel down to the top of the gearbox that drives the steering rack
They are commonly held together on a splined shaft fitting- to prevent twisting motion when you turn the wheel- the two pieces are tightly togther- there is a cv type joint in there too, to go from the shaft angle to box-
that steering shaft bearing may have been bad from lack of lube? not a normal place to lube, but power washing may have rinsed grease away?

go put it to the test- see if its really fixed

I once had a thunkthunk the dealer could never find--turned out the front sway bar was slightly out of position and was hitting the control arm.. under just the right conditions

was it covered by an extended warranty?

Thanks for the inputs.
No, it wasn't covered under warranty.

This problem was reported on another Honda forum, and I am not sure how much the cost was. I am trying to troubleshoot my clunking problem and got a feedback from that member; thus, I wasn't sure where to lub mine.

"Remove the intermediate shaft , lubricate the intermediate shaft with a Steering Column Intermediate Shaft Lubrication Kit"

interesting--go ask acura for that lube kit--it will have whatever special grease it needs
and may contain consumer instructions

removal of the middle shaft is pretty easy `if like normal cars`- just look at it for bolts and the spline connector will be obvious

Thanks. I will look at the shaft and see if it is an issue.
