You are correct. Whenveer your A/C is on, it will affect your mileage.

If it's not on Auto, it should read A/C on or off.

Opening the windows is bad. Leave the A/C on. You will find you get better milage with the A/C on. When you open the window you mess up the aerodynamics and get a lot of wind resistance.

If it shows auto then the a/c compressor is engaged.

When you set it to Auto, the climate control computer automatically switches your A/C on and off, controls fan speed, and sets your recirculation settings. When you turn off Auto, all controls are manually set. If the A/C was on, it will remain on, if it was off, it will remain off. You must then change all the settings manually.

I think that leaving it on Auto saves gas because it turns off the compressor when the desired temperature is reached.

If I just hit the recirculation button it no longer controls temp?

The systems is designed to let the computer fully control the temp, the display will read full auto. If you press any buttons it is partially controlled by computer and will read auto which still still allows computer to control the temp to some extent or you can override the computer by just pressing the a/c button which will show a/c and the computer plays and even smaller role in controling the temp.

Does setting our climate conrtol cause your gas milage to suffer? i leave my control set to about 68 degrees but its not on AUTO. I assumed using AUTO to control your temp means that the AC would have to be activated to keep the desired temp. am i wrong?

Sorry but I didn't spend 30 large on a car not to use my a/c during hot sticky weather. You might try saving money in other ways. Try bringing lunch from home once in a while instead of buying it everyday. You would save $50-$100 a month easy. Watch whats on cable instead of renting movies. Rent movies instead of going to the theatre. Like that new outfit in the department store? Wait until it's on sale before you buy it. When running errands, consolidate as many as you can in one trip instead of many smaller ones.I think I've already saved $300 this month..now I can drive in cool comfort :-)
