Angry Cleaning Intake Manifold - Can't get bolt off

I'm trying to clean my intake manifold on my TL-S, and I've got everything disconnected, but I CANNOT get a bolt off.... it's on page 9-5 of the helms manual, it's the bolt securing the TCS control valve bracket. It's the big bolt in the center of the picture. I've sprayed it with WD40 and seafoam deep creep.

It just won't budge. If I can't get it off, I don't think I can get everything disconnected so I'll have to give up. I really need to get to the IACV too and clean that out as it's been giving me problems.

Any ideas?

Short of air tools, I would try to get as much leverage as possible.

Are you using enough extensions to get the ratchet handle away from the TB? That way, you could use a really long pipe or breaker bar for leverage.

Yeah I'm using extensions, but it's just stuck on there. I've pretty much stripped 2 12mm sockets. I guess I'll just have to put it back together. I just can't get it off. Damn!

a breaker bar would be better than extensions. as its longer for better leverage and fucking beefy so you wont snap the tool.

Doesnt Sea Foam do this pretty good w/o having to remove this? What would cause id to get so nasty that one would need to remove it in the 1st place?

I'm assuming he is trying to clean the egr valve...

But as stated above, you need leverage...Iswear, the BEST tool in my garage is a 20 extendable Husky ratchet from Home Depot....
It works EVERY time...Every single time.

Sea foam won't clean all this stuff. I've got quite a bit of carbon and other deposits caked on inside the IM. There's nothing that will get all that off other than a good cleaning.

Yeah I'll have to get one. I just don't have many advanced tools. A socket wrench and other basic stuff like that have always done just fine for me in the past... up until today.

And yeah - you're right about the EGR ports. The whole thing is just cruddy, and it needs a good cleaning. Check out the above pics.

the bolt should round before the socket strips unless you are really using CHEAP tools. Are you getting the socket on all the way? Put some leverage into it.

Buy an air tool hardened steel six point socket. No way on earth that will strip. It may rip the head of that bolt off if it's seized though. Be careful. Also try tightening it and then loosening it. Back and forth a few times, then spray some PB Blaster on it and let it sit. Do this a few times and then put your breaker bar on your racket (I use a big ass steel pipe) Give it a nice solid initial tug and then moderate pressure. Don't go hercules on it or you'll rip that bolt in two. You can get that bolt out of there. Be patient.

Yeah - I got two sockets on there fully... and stripped both of them.

That's precisely what I need - the air tool kit. I've never worked with one before either. I tried every which way, and it would not move a bit. I had no other choice but to give up.

I live two blocks from Turner Field. I don't have a garage though - only my private street. I do have beer though! Have you done any IM cleaning? I'd love to get those EGR ports cleaned out.

Can't believe you stripped 2 sockets. Have to be real cheapies -or the wrong size. A decent 6 point Craftsman socket and 1/4 inch drive will get that off. I have broken the heads off bolts before stripping out a socket.
Odd.
Let us know how it works out.

as said before- try tighten slightly then loosen- that often breaks the corrosion bond thats formed

any penetrating fluid should get in there overnight and help too
all else fails- vibration via hammer and socket
DONT go superman on the bolt or it will happily snap off-
leaving you slightly more ~screwed~ that you are now~

EGR= exhaust gas recirculation sends partially unburnt fuel/exhaust back into intake manifold for reburning
Runs all the time except idle and full throttle
no way for seafoam to do anything about this particular problem

PB Blaster ftw.

And I meant to say that Husky extendable ratchet is only $20. Well worth it, and it comes with a few good sockets.

Well after a local mechanic got that bolt loose for me yesterday, I was able to tear everything down today and clean the crap out of everything. Looks great, and runs great! I wasn't able to do the seafoam today though, as it got dark. I'll do that tomorrow! I changed out my cabin air filters while I was waiting for the engine to cool, which was another thing on my list.

All in all a great day - and couldn't have done it without you guys!

Thanks!

just above idle is not all we should be doing
read and follow some 2000 rpm method

Oh yeah, I've read the DIY, and I figured that part out last time I did it. The clear bottle for the foam and the clear hose will also be very helpful. I didn't use either of those last time... but I've got them now.

Can't wait to foam the TL tomorrow! I cleaned that crap out of that IM today. I couldn't believe how much crap came out of there. It looks brand new!!! Most of the smaller EGR ports were fairly clogged... I'd say about halfway clogged. The main one was also in rough shape as you can see in the pics above. It's all clean and shiny now though!!! I did end up taking the plenums off and cleaning those too. It made the entire process easier.

For the 3G, both the IM cover gasket and the lower IM gasket are marked in the Service Manual as "Replace". Not sure if it's the same for the 2G, but since they are similar parts, similar function, etc, they may be.

OTOH, when I did my '07 I did not replace the cover gasket and it's never been an issue as far as I can tell.
